Warriors tame Lions 28-15 en gridiron
By ESTI KEEN The Warriors hosted the Bremen Lions in a center ring attraction last Friday. The Warriors did a thorough job of taming the growling Lions. 28-15, to net a Northern Lakes Conference victory. The show began with a Bremen drive headed by senior Mike Swain plowing over from the one to put up the first score. Assembling for retaliation, the Warriors missed their mark as Keith Cripe’s pass was stolen by Steve Stichter at the Warrior 36. Wawasee was challenged twice more in the first half, as the Lions broke through to the Warrior 10, but Wawasee defense came through each time on fourth and one situations. Wawasee’s sole first half score was delivered in a 15 play, 95yard package which was wrapped up by senior running back Rick Bauman, springing 17 yards for his first in a series of four touchdowns. The two-point conversion failed and the Lions maintained a lead. 7-6. after two quarters. The opening of the second half saw a delay in the proceedings as Wawasee was late to receive the kick off. The five-yard tax was the only true setback for the Warriors for the remainder of the game. Next Bauman and Cripe played major roles in securing the lead for Wawasee A 73-yard drive was headed off by a 42-yard Bauman push. Defender Mark Jensen made a leaping tackle at the Bremen one to prolong the inevitable score. Bauman rambled over on the next play to make it 12-7. The conversion did not go through. Bauman had his best efforts of the season, stacking up 227 yards on only 19 carries, a commendable 11.9-yard per carry average.

The defense forced Bremen to f punt for the first time in the evening during the second half. Popenfoose fielded it and headed upfield but was stopped at the 10. Cripe handed off to Bauman on a dash to the right and after penetrating a blockade at the line of scrimmage, he tore up 90 yards of turf to light the board again. “Bremen defended the play the only way you could,” stated coach Traviolia, “When you have an opponent hemmed inside their own 10 you have to stack the line. It ’s a goal line type of stand. Rick happened to break through and obviously there just wasn’t anybody left to get him.” Cripe opened the spread two more after succeeding in the conversion attempt. The Warriors now claimed a 20-7 advantage. Early in the final quarter a 11yard Cripe to Mark Francis
