Home Bible study meetings begin Wawasee Heights Baptist church
Home Bible-study meetings in Syracuse homes, taught by Rev. Kenneth Brown, began in the spring of 1961. Fifteen years later, the same families worship at the Wawasee Heights Baptist church. The congregation first met as the Syracuse Baptist church and had tent revivals. Regular services began Sunday, July 22, 1962, where the people met at Hoosier Skateland. Rev. Brown served as the first pastor until the first regular pastor. Rev. James C. Paige came in August 1962. Soon after Rev. Paige became pastor, during the fall of 1962. the group bought the old Syracuse Methodist church building and completely redecorated it. Services were then moved there. In 1963, Rev. Paige resigned and Rev. Robert A. Mundy became the pastor. Rev. Mundy began his ministry at the church in October and served as pastor for the next 10 years. Convening in March 1964, a recognition council recognized the church as a duly-organized and constituted New Testament Baptist church. During the year the church was also received into the Indiana Fellowship of Regular Baptist churches and the General Association of Regular Baptist churches. New facilities became needed as the church grew. In the fall of 1967, nearly four acres in the Wawasee Heights addition were purchased for a new church. doing much of the work. With the building of a new building, the name of the church was changed to Wawasee Heights Baptist church. Services were moved into the basement of the new facility in the summer of 1968. Work was still continuing on the new auditorium, where the first service was conducted August 24. 1969. And dedication services were held with a capacity audience on November 16,1969 for the new church. Present membership in the church numbers about 140 persons who attend services and Sunday school. “Our program now, we feel that we have accomplished the building aspect, we want to reach the community with the Word of God,’’ says Rev. James A. Freerksen, present pastor. Several programs have been begun among youth of the church this fall. Pro-teen, for junior and senior high youth, has Wednesday night Bible-study and week end activities. Also AW ANA, for third through sixth graders, is a program similar to Scouting, with crafts and outdoor activities, but leadership and council times deal with the religious aspect of life. The name AWANA comes from second Timothy 2:15 and stands for approved workmen are not ashamed. Deacons of the Wawasee Heights Baptist church are Keith Koble, Dick Mundy and Marion Acton. Trustees of the church are Larry Miller, Don Neer and Jack Keener.

People who wish to share their lives with others make-up church By Rev. James A. Freerksen Wawasee Heights Baptist church is people. It is people who have put their trust in the redeeming, saving work of Jesuk Christ and who desire to share that life with other people. God in His love has not chosen to leave mankind to suffer the awful consequences of sin, but has made possible salvation through the blood of Christ death. Any person may freely receive this salvation, which is eternally secure, by truly repenting of his sin and receiving Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.
Religion is man reaching for God; Bible Christianity is God reaching down to man. The people of Wawasee Heights Baptist believe the Bible is their only authority for teaching and practice. They do not seek to follow the creeds or the Reformers. They believe the Bible is infallible iri all its parts. It is to be understood literally, following the natural rules of grammar. Wawasee Heights Baptist church, like other Bible-believing Baptist churches, believes in the independence of its church from outside authority. It decides its business from the authority of God’s Word. Baptists are often associated with baptism. Yet, they do not believe baptism is necessary for salvation, but that salvation is necessary for baptism. churches in the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, of which 131 are in Indiana. The purpose of Wawasee Heights Baptist is to carry out the Great Commission and the other : commands of the Word of God. It desires to meet the needs in the lives of all people and to provide Christian growth and Godly fellowship for God’s people. The program of Wawasee Heights Baptist is |||| likewise people. The building programs are past. The emphasis now is to minister to all ages. The Sunday school involves 14 classes, for ages two through 82; the morning service also includes a beginner church and junior church program. Five classes meet on Wednesday evening to studv God’s Word. Further, there are two ladies’ Bible studies, a “Pro-Teen” program for junior and senior high youth, and a new Scouting and Club program (Awana) for grades three-six on Thursday nights from 6:30-8.
