Warriors stop Cougars to win 20-7 victory
By ESTI KEEN The Warrior defense made a grand showing last Friday night as they quelled the New Prairie Cougar protest and held it down to a humble “meow” in their 20-7 football victory. The Warrior defense has been subject to scrutiny, namely in its last two showings, as the boys gave up a total of 71 points. Several personnel switches were made by coach Traviolia to display a commendable defensive effort. The Warriors gave up just 144 yards rushing and less than 200 yards total offense. The victory finished off a twogame losing streak for the Warriors and evened their record 2-2. By the end of the contest, a very successful defensive crew had three quarterback sacks, a recovered fumble, a pass interception and two blocked punts in their favor. It was a good team effort. Bill Rensberger. John Beer and Ted Knudsen were tackle leaders. But the defense couldn't have taken the show alone; a forceful Wawasee offense was also a high note of the game. Quarterback Keith Cripe was in charge of an offensive lunge connecting seven of 19 passes for 117 yards. Down on earth the Warriors pushed for 240 yards rushing and 357 yards total. Rick Bauman was the ringleader in the ground game, rushing for 132 yards. He averaged 5.7 yards per carry and scored all three touchdowns. Bauman now claims rushing for wer 400 yards this season. The man with the bag of plays was Joel Popenfoose who rushed for 64 yards on just four carries. He also trapped two passes for 44 yards The first quarter saw what seemed to be a fumble match between the two teams and the scoreboard remained dark. The Warrior attack got underway in the second stanza as they lit the scoreboard twice. Bauman rambled 18 yards, thanks to an outstanding block by Greg Evans, for the first score. Bauman came through again with 3:57 remaining and reached paydirt from 11 yards out. The third quarter started out with an onside kick that fell short of goal by just a few inches. The Cougars didn't waste the advantage a’nd a 15-yard penalty. In five plays the cougars had narrowed the spread to 13-7 on a two-yard run bv Garoutte. New Prairie remained in a target position in the later part of the third and the early part of the fourth. Two penalties put Wawasee at a greater disadvantage but the determined
