Dr. Harold Wilke to speak at Easter Seal conference
DR. HAROLD WILKE Dr. Harold Wilke, an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ jmd an international expert ink varied aspects of rehabilitation, will be the keynote speaker at the 37th annual meeting of the Indiana Easter Seal Societies for Crippled Children and Adults on October 9. As an expert in rehabilitation. Dr. Wilke has lectured in almost three dozen countries around the world, in all 50 states of the United States, and has served as a special consultant to government groups and voluntary organizations in West Germany, the Scandinavian countries, England and Scotland. Dr. Wilke is an articulate and forceful speaker and relates the cause of voluntaryism to concerns in medicine and rehabilitation. Speaking about the handicapped, he quickly goes into a focus on everyone, since we are all, he postulates, handicapped in one way or another, so the question is, "how do we respond to our difficulties". Dr. Wilke dismisses the fact that he has no arms by saying, “It’s important, of course, but not in the sense which most people put it.” Dr. Wilke directs the interdenomination “Healing Community" project, designed to help churches and other voluntary groups receive the "alienated" of our society — ex-offenders, handicapped, retarded — back into the mainstream of community life. He recently completed twenty years as executive director of a national agency of the United Church of Christ concerned with programming for the 9,000 ministers of the denomination, ranging from recruitment through student care, theological education, pastoral placement, army, navy and air force chaplaincies and international exchanges. As chairman of the General Commission on Chaplains and Armed Forces Personnel, Washington. D. C., Dr. Wilke serves as a Protestant "bishop" to service personnel around the world. Author of a number of books in the field of pastoral care and psychology. Dr. Wilke has

written many articles for professional journals and provided chapters for a number of books in Germany on rehabilitation. Dr. Wilke will speak at the Volunteers’ Luncheon scheduled at 11:30 a.m., October 9. The meeting, being held at the Sheraton Motor Inn, 7701 East 42d street, Indianapolis, is open to the public. Reservations can be made by calling the Indiana Easter Seal Society for Cripple Children and Adults at Indianapolis.
