Warsaw, East Noble labeled girls' golf top competitors ■ Labeling Warsaw and East Noblo as tough competitors. Wawasee high school girls' golf coach Mavis Vanderveer said. “So I’m sure they'll be out for blood As we will too ” Last year, the girls golf team finished just four strokes out of the state meet They finished 4-2 and, “Our biggest competition last year was East Noble They won the two from us They were both very close.’’ Vanderveer said. Returning to play again this year are Tammy Somers. Lm l’mmel. Benji i Hall. Tern Holtzclaw. Debbie Dieterly and Shelly Harting And Vanderveer says she has four freshmen who are coming on. Lynn Brown. Carla Darr and Charlette Tatman Darr is doing very well and Vanderveer says “She's very unproved ’’ “My number one girl, Tammy, has had more experience She and Dieterly both are pretty consistent,” Vanderveer explains. “1 depend upon them probably more than anyone else ’’ “Sometimes they have one or two good practice rounds and they 're psyched up." Vanderveer commented "But this doesn’t mean they'll play well. In practice it s one thing and the pressure of a meet is another thing If you're down one or two strokes it’s pressure and you’ve got to cut it." Vanderveer added that since the girls compete directly against an opponent, this also adds some pressure

Rochester downs Warriors 38-12 for NLC victory
By ESTI KEEN The Rochester herd of Zebras did more than just graze the Wawasee stadium last Friday evening — they left the well trodden arena with a Northern Lakes Conference victory, 38-12. Rochester took some time kicking up its heels in the first quarter as the Zebras were forced to punt for the first and last time in the game. When the Warriors found themselves in the same predicament the Zebras took the pigskin on their 46 after the Warrior punt and then rambled up to the Warrior fouryard line. Quarterback Ed Waltz then signaled Beck, who headed for paydirt and the first Zebra touchdown. Waltz topped it off as he hurled a spiral into Frounfelters mits for the two-point conversion, sending the Zebras on their way with an 8-0 advantage. Wawasee came through on the kickoff when Rochester was called for a face mask violation. From the Warrior 48 quarter back Keith Cripe shot two fast bullets, an eight-yarder to Steve Cromer and one to Joel Popenfoose for 27 yards to set the scene for a Warrior score. As the pigskin found itself at the nine, powerhouse Rick Bauman plowed into the end one for a TD. The conversion failed and the Warriors were held at 8-6. The rest of the second stanza saw no change in the score as the opponents held each other in check. The next touchdown for the Warriors came compliments of Rick Bauman who also added another 48 yards to the 129 he had tallied previously in the game rushing. He was by far the leading yardage burner on the field.

By ESTI KEEN The Wawasee tennis team hosted a Columbia City squad last Wednesday and was defeated 6-3. In doubles competition, Carl and Hamman were the Wawasee victors managing a 10-6 advantage. The team, coached by Jim Webster, paid North Wood a visit Saturday to be disappointed in a 5-0 wipe-out. The JV round was an instant replay, ending in a 5-0 verdict. Jimtown Against Jimtown Monday, the netters suffered four out of five losses in singles but cleaned up in both doubles matches. J.D. Carl and Tim Hamman teamed up to V olley ball team O-2 By ESTI KEEN The Wawasee girls' volleyball team, coached by Pam Juday, traveled to Elkhart Central last Wednesday in initiation of the fall season In spite of Warriorettes expertise, demonstrated in the performance of all players, the varsity squad lost two out of three games — 5-15, 15-3, 11-15. Phyllis Horvath led the Warriorette passing and setting department, Lorene Spearman showed skill in her powerful spikes while Bea Carvajal held off the attack with the most saves. JV Wins The JV squad ousted its offenders winning two out of three games — 15-4. 9-14, 15-1. At Ply month Thursday the girls traveled to Plymouth for some more treats in very difficult competition and were defeated in two out of three matches - 5-15, 15-3, 11-15. J TALKING IT OVER — Wawasee coach Hal Traviolta and quarterback Keith Cripe talk over the next play during the game Friday night. v The Warriors were unsuccessful in overcoming the Zebras from Rochester with the visitors winning 38-12.
Early in the third quarter Zebra's Frounfelter ran back a Warrior punt 31 yards to place Rochester on target at the Warrior 23. He took the pigskin (Mi the second down from the 22 and scrambled around the right aid for paydirt to open the lead 14-6. The two-point effort went by
efforts shooting a 48 yesterday in their bout against East Noble, only this time the crusade wasn’t as fruitful. The 214-217 loss saw the golfers’ record dip to 2-2. Tomorrow (Thursday) coach Mavis Vanderveer’s crew will travel to Huntington for a 4:15 match.
sweep a smooth 10-5, while Paul Shrumph and Jeff Iden came home with a 10-4 victory. the way-side. It was either now or never for the Warriors At this point of the game there was little room for error and the Warriors proved what determination is good for. From their own 30-yard line the Warriors pushed to the Rochester 10. Cripe fired a fast-one to Bauman off the right end and the unstopable Bauman arranged another six points. Wawasee needed the two-point conversion to even the score but an incomplete pass held the score at 14-12. ■ With a minute to go in the third stanza Waltz pitched a 13-yarder DIRECTIONS TO NEW PRAIRIE The Wawasee high school football team travels to New Prairie high school this Friday evening for its fourth game of the season. to end Joe Paulik for another TD. From the three yard stripe Waltz lofted the pigskin again into Paulik’s clutches on the conversion to push the three period tally to 22-12. After a Warrior punt Rochester pushed from its own 12 through a failing Warrior defense to the Wawasee where a Waltz-Paulik connection scored again. The conversion failed, stopping the score at 30-12. The Zebras ended their scoring stampede when Rochester took possession on the Wawasee 11 and four plays later bagged a TD as Frounfelter shoved through the center. Waltz’s option on the conversion was denied so he shot it in to bring the final score to 3812. The Warriors are looking forward to their game against New Prairie this Friday.
