Arden B. Martin Arden B Martin, 75. 304 South Indiana Ave., Goshen, died Monday, Sept. 13, in the Goshen hospital, where he had been a patient for one week Martin had been ill with cancer A Milford native, he was born to Alfred and Elizabeth (Alexander) Martin on March 12, 1901, and on January 10, 1921 married Gladys Bessemer Martin, who retired from Standard Plating Works, in Goshen, in 1972, also worked in the Goshen area as a decorator and painter. He was a veteran of World War I and belonged to the Goshen Veterans of Foreign Wars Surviving with his wife. Gladys, are two daughters. Mrs Robert (Carol) Timmons, Goshen, and Mrs. Kenneth (Marie) Sheley. Topeka; three sons, Arden, Jr., and Richard Martin, both of Goshen, and Stanley Martin. Milford; two brothers. Dewey Lynn, Goshen and Clyde. Elkhart; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (W'inifred) Cripe. Goshen, and Mrs Wayne (Rosemary) Lantz. Millersburg, 31 grandchildren; 28 greatgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Two children preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday in Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret funeral home, in Goshen, at 2 p.m. Memorials to the Cancer Society may be made in the deceased's name. Stella Welty Services were conducted Monday, Sept 13. for Mrs. Stella Mae Welty. 82. of East Fifth St., New Paris, who passed away Friday in the Goshen hospital, where she had been admitted earlier in the day She had been in failing health for approximately six months and died following a senes of strokes The deceased was born in New Paris to Wftliam Calvert and Ida Jane (Johnston) Brady on December 14. 1893 and on April 6. 1916 married Andrew Jefferson Welty Her husband preceded her in death in 1948 A member of. the New Paris Church of the Brethren, she u> survived by three sons, Lloyd A Welty and William J. Sherman Coy Sherman Coy, Sr., 87, of Shamrock Trailer Ct., Warsaw, died Wednesday, Sept. 8. from a self inflicted gunshot wound The deceased was married to Hazel Goble on September 24, 1910, in North Webster. She preceded him in death on July 25 of this year Survivors include two sons. Eugene Coy of Goshen and Sherman Coy, Jr., of Warsaw; a step daughter. Mrs. Helen Clapman of Goshen; and two brothers. Ernest Coy of Columbia City and Roy Coy of Ligonier Funeral services were held Saturday. Sept 11 in the Ulery funeral home in Ligonier. Burial was in the Syracuse cemetery Max Randolph Max Randolph. 56. of Fort Wayne, staying in his cottage on Crow Dr , on Wawasee Lake, died after falling through the storm door glass of the cottage on Sunday. Sept 12 The Randolphs had returned to their cottage and Mrs Randolph had gone into the utility room, when she heard the shattering of glass Running into another room she found her husband laying prone with his bleeding head through the broken storm door She called neighbors and they attempted to revive the victim with mouth to mouth resuscitation Mrs Randolph called the Syracuse emergency medical service. Mr. Randolph died shortly after the ambulance arrived on the scene According to coroner Kenneth Wyman the death was attributed to a heart attack before the fall through the glass door Randolph had a history of heart trouble Hams funeral home service transported the body to Fort Wayne for funeral services John S. Yoder John S Yoder. 81. r 2 Milford, died early Tuesday morning in Goshen hospital, where he had been a patient for two days A retired farmer, Yoder was bom April 28. 1895 and on December 23. 1926 wed Ada Schmucker Surviving with his wife, Ada. are two sons. Roman, Kokomo, and Otis, Kalona, Iowa; eight daughters. Mrs Allen (Laura) Myers, Goshen. Patterson, 74, of r 1 Milford died Tuesday evening in Kosciusko Community hospital in Warsaw, where he had been a patient since August 30. He had, been ill with a heart condition for one year. Patterson worked as head of the receiving department for the Da-Lite Co. in Warsaw for 11 years prior to his retirement He was born July 17, 1902 in Nashville, and on June 9, 1945 was married to Kathryn Kropf He was a member of the First Brethren church in Goshen His wife, Kathryn, survives with two daughters, Mrs. James E. (Faye) Whittaker, Mrs. Patsy Ann Goulet, both of Elkhart; three grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; one brother, Herman Patterson, Decatur; and three sisters, Mrs. Frieda Hohnert, Kokomo, Mrs. Ira (Florence) Whittridge, Shelbyville. Mich., and Mrs. Lola Burke, Cadillac, Mich. Friends will .be received Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. in the Yoder Culp funeral home in Goshen where the services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will follow in the Violett cemetery. Goshen. Dorothy Smith A well known former resident of Syracuse died in Sarasota. Fla., Sunday. Sept 12. Dorothy Smith. 95. who lived and worked in Syracuse for several years, moved to Florida three years ago to be with her daughter Mrs Andy (Sue) Anderson. She had been seriously ill for approximately nine months and was confined to the Wilhelm retirement home nursing unit in Sarasota Born to Mr and Mrs. Ketchum on January 21.1881 in Henry, 111., she married Melvin Smith of Syracuse who preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith was a home economist for AB Stove Company, traveling all over the country to present cooking demonstrations She also owned a delicatessen in uptown Syracuse and then managed a tea room on North Harrison street. Her daughter Sue is her only survivor Two sons preceded her in death Funeral services and cremation were held in Florida. Births STUMP. Christal Renee V, Mr. and Mrs Terry Stump of r 3 Syracuse are parents of a daughter born September 10 in the Elkhart hospital. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs James Mench of Syracuse and Mr. and Mrs. Maurice (“Maury’’) Snyder of Syracuse. Great grandparents are Mrs Ada Cramer of Fort Wayne and Mrs John Knisley of Syracuse. Aidmen assisted Mrs. Ken Harkless on Friday morning after she fell on the sidewalk in front of Pickwick Place. She suffered a small laceration above her left eye and abrasions on her head. She insisted she was alright and aidmen advised her to see a doctor. Aidmen were called to Crow Rd., on Wawasee Lake Saturday to assist Max Randolph, 56, of Fort Wayne who had suffered a heart attack and fallen through a glass storm door. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Newcum moved to Cassopolis, Mich., where Mr. Newcum has accepted employment -NSSyracuse youth beaten A 17-year-old Syracuse youth, Gerald Thomas Strauss, was assaulted by four youths Monday evening east of the KosciuskoNoble County Line road near CR 900 N. Reportedly Strauss had been riding with the four youths. They farced him out of the car and held him down while one youth from Cromwell beat him around the face, back and groin area. The 17-year-old youth who beat Strauss was taken to jail and charged with assault and battery. Juvenile court handled the case.
Bethel Church to hold joint meeting The Bethel Church of the Brethren in Milford will hold a joint meeting at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 19, at Snider’s woods. No Sunday school classes will be held on that day. The woods is located one-half mile west of the poultry processing plant north of US 6 off of SR 15, near New Paris. The men of the church are sponsoring the outdoor worship in conjunction with their annual camp-out at the woods location. Everyone is asked to take a folding chair. A pot luck dinner will follow the service. Visitors are invited to attend. Milford police give August activities The monthly report for August has been released by the Milford police department. Calls answered by the department numbered 119. A breakdown of actions by the officers is one breaking and entering, 15 warnings, three accidents, three dog complaints. 10 thefts, two burglar alarms, three arrests and one funeral. The department logged 1,683 miles for the month, with chief Melvin Jordan driving 1,209 miles and Robert Wood, 474 miles. A total cost for the 208.5 gallons of gas used for the month was $162.56. Maintenance on the cruiser for August cost $97.48. Hub cops are stolen from car Frank Bush of 201 W. North St., Syracuse, reported the theft of two hub caps from the right side of his 1973 Chevrolet Nova. He wasn’t sure whether the hub caps were taken during the night in Syracuse or on Tuesday in Fort Wayne. Turning car bumps truck A car driven by an unidentified driver bumped a Northern Indiana Public Service Co. truck in the process of turning from Huntington St. onto Henry St. in Syracuse on Saturday, Sept. 11. Wilbur Smith, 48, driving the truck, reported the incident to the police. Damages resulting in the mishap were $25 damages to the truck.

Prayer for America campaign to begin
“It’s time to pray, America”, is a dramatic plan to mobilize the nation in prayer for 40 days between this coming week end - and November 2. It is fast taking shape across the country. President Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, plus Billy Graham, Johnny Cash and Pat Robertson are among the key figures of the prayer campaign. Pastors from across the nation from virtually all demoninations will be leading their congregations in prayer for moral and ethical leadership in government, education, the media, business, the professions, church and family life. What the program seeks is a renewal of America's national committment as “One nation under God”, and a shift away from current trends towards moral decay, according to a spokesman for the Christian Broadcasting network (CBN) which is sponsoring the campaign. Some 200,000 American ministers, priests and rabbis have been invited to lead their congregations in prayer for America in each of the seven week ends between September 17 and the time America goes to the polls. Some 217 television stations will carry a special bearing the title “It’s Time to Pray, America.” with channel 22, South Bend airing the program at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18. Channel 15. Fort Wayne will carry the program at 9 p.m. Sunday. The special features President Ford, Jimmy Carter, Billy i Cycle stolen from business in Syracuse The Sizemore Cycle Shop in Wawasee Village reported the theft of a 1976 Suzuki motorcycle at 1:40 p.m, Saturday. Apparently a man between 35 and 40 borrowed the cycle and never returned the bike to the shop.
