County settlers begin tale of New Salem church

When families were settling in northern Kosciusko county, some chose to worship at the Pleasant yiew chapel, which was built in 1879. a The distance to the church was too far for some to travel, so part of the brethren attended services held by W. R. Deeter, who held services at the Crowl school in 1882. For years, services were alternated between these two locations, and it was decided that a church should be built near the Crowl school house. In early March, 1896, parishoners canvassed for money to build a structure. A council at the chapel house that April gave permission to build a new church on the Sam Ulery farm. The building committee of Manly Deeter, Enoch Hoover and Sam Ulery planned and made arrangements for the sand, tile, brick, stone, cement and lumber. Masons began work on the church on April 26, 1897, the carpenters on May 17, and the plasterers on June 28. The brick veneer church with basement was ready for dedication on September 12,1897. Speaker for the occasion was E. S. Young, president of the North Manchester Bible school. The new church became known as the Salem house and lata- in 1911, the Salem territory became the New Salem congregation. Raymond M. Lantis became the first full-time pastor. William Overholser assumed the pastorship in September 1921. Beginning in January 1924 and continuing through September of that year, Russell Herman served as the pastor. Pastor for the next two years was Emeral Jones who was followed by John Eberly, who was the pastor until 1930. Home ministers took over the pastoral work in 1930. Ezra Flory’ started work in 1932 with Russel Weller assuming the duties in January 1933. Howard J. Kreider was the pastor for 15 years

beginning in October 1934, and he worked full-time on church business during his last four years. The son of the first pastor, Paul C. Lantis became the pastor on Sept. 1,1949 and also worked at the job full-time. # From September 1, 1953 through May 31, 1956, Welton Snavely was the New Salem church pastor. Other pastors of the New Salem church are Ernest Bowman, Rev. Edward Lyons, Rev. Howard Kreider, Michael Ostrander, David Lewycky and the present pastor is Chad Woodburn, who has been the pastor since 1972. Persons who are ordained by the church are Emeral Jones, Russell Stout, Orvin Kilmer, Eldon Morehouse, Dave Lewycky and Dave Beer. In June 1969, the first Missonary conference was held at the church, with approval fol a yearly conference coming in 1970. Early in 1951 plans were made for a new vestibule at the church. Hie church was incorporated in February 6,1962, and withdrawals of support of the General Brotherhood and the affiliation with the National Council of churches were made shortly after. The increase of population in the area, due to the lakes brought an increase in attendance and the need for additional space at the church. So a survey was made to determine the long-range needs of the church, plans were drawn up and approved by the church council on September 12, 1965. A ground-breaking ceremony was held on June 5,1966 and work was begun on the structure. The cornerstone was laid on October 9, 1966. Classes started using the rooms before they were painted and completed. And the church had a mortgage burning service, Sunday, June 23, 1974, with the papers burned by trustees Frank Johnson. Glen Morehouse and John Plank.
