Grace Bible church established in 1945

The first pastor of the Grace Bible church, Syracuse, was John E. Sanson, who assumed his duties as pastor in 1945. Rev. Sanson was a Grace Seminary graduate student and while pastor, his wife and son Jerry played piano in the church. When his studies were finished at the seminary, pastor Sanson accepted another pastorship. Rev. Fred Fogel assumed the pastorship and the church grew. Later, it was Rev. Wilber McCain who became pastor of Grace Bible church. An old garage was purchased at 518 South Main street, Syracuse, and was remodeled in September 1949. When the church was dedicated at this location, 104 people attended the services. In August 1954, pastor McCain left the pastorship and Rev. M. Raymond Mason assumed the position. During this time, the church was organized and the church board was set up and incorporated. Grace Bible church also joined the Independent Fundamental Churches of America (FCA). Rev. Mason served as pastor for eight years and left Syracuse in December 1962, when Rev. David R. Haifley became the pastor. Under Rev. Haifley’s direction, the church was reorganized. Several ministries were also begun, a prison ministry and a radio ministry. In 1967, Rev. Haifley left the community to become administrator of an lowa Christian school. Rev. Robert Graff

assumed the pastorship then. Rev. Haifley was called back by the congregation to start a Christian school and he served as school administrator for one year while Rev. Graff was the pastor. The congregation and Rev. Graff asked that Rev. Haifley also assume duties as pastor, which he did. Rev. Graff now serves as assistant pastor. The garage at 518 South Main street was sold and the church purchased the old Hex Grange property and buildings on CR 35. Recently 10 acres near the church was purchased which, “We intend to develop in the future,” says Rev. Haifley. The Grace Bible school has 55 children enrolled in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. “Nearly all of our graduates have gone on to college,” Rev. Haifley said. Some graduates now teach in the school after receiving their teaching degrees. The Grace Bible church now has a congregation of 110 people and over 30 per cent of the church income goes to missions. “Our main thrust right now is the school, the radio ministry and the Bible institute,” said Rev. Haifley. The Bible institute is an evening school by the Indiana Fundamental Bible institute. And the chiirch’s prison ministry was dropped a few years ago. Rev. Haifley explained about the church further saying, “We’re an independent church but we’re baptistic in doctrine.”

S No one needs to be “taught” that there is punishment for doing |||| bad and reward for doing good! And strange as this may seem, ||| no one needs to be "taught" that there is a heaven and that there is a hell. This is what the Lord meant when He said. "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea " This surely does not mean that every little child “believes” in the sense of H meeting the need for his salvation, as Paul told the Philippian jailer in Acts 16:31, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved and thy house!” But it is the'most natural thing there is for a child, when he reaches that age where he is ac|S countable for his choice, to make the decision for Christ! If he is nurtured in the Word of God. -- : - —

At the Grace Bible church, we have numerous young people who came to a •‘saving” knowledge of Jesus Christ at a verytender age Why? Because they were taught at home and at church the Holy Scriptures “which are able to make thee wise unto salvation ” This nurture, coupled with the natural “light” that is in them, produces a faith which leads to their eternal salvation! Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. John said, “That was the true Light, which lighteth every | man that cometh into the world.” Well, then it would seem that if everyone already believes that, there would be no need of missionaries, preachers or teachers! However, that light or | belief which is in every child is a “bridge” over which a sinful 1 man can traverse to a Holy God “He that cometh unto God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6. Oh, how difficult it is to convince one erf his need when that “light” has been takenjrom him And that light can be taken! That is why Jesus said. “Woe to those who offend.” That is the offense Woe to those on the supreme court of the land who ruled the Word of God out of the schools Woe to those teachers who teach that God did not create the heaven and the earth as He says that He did. “who know not God.” They are like the “Pharoah who knew not Joseph.” and who said to the man of God, Moses, “Who is the ||||| Lord, that I should obey his voice?” We, as a nation, have digressed from the faith of those who founded this great nation, as Pharoah had digressed from the attitudes of the Pharoahs before him who honored Joseph's God. Consider how far from the words of “sorrowful" Adam, (who had sinned, in answer to God's query "Adam where art thou?” “Because I was naked, I hid myself,") are Pharoah s words. From the lowly "I hid myself” because of my sin, to the haughty “Who is the Lord, » that I should obey his voice?” From the humble pleadings of General George Washington at Valley Forge — to the decision of the supreme court eliminating the Bible from the schools so Sat the teachers of anti-God philosophies would not be hinted. This is why the Grace Bible church started the Syracuse Christian school. We believe in high academics taught in a |||| spiritual atmosphere Not that we might cram “religion” per se, down their throats — but that we might foster that natural light that is in them, with the Word of God.
