Syracuse Pony League wins four-way tourney
The Syracuse Pony League team capped off a great year by winning the league tournament. Syracuse bested North Webster 3-1, took out Mentone 9-4, and beat Leesburg in the finals 3-2. Scott Heady was the winning pitcher and in winning completed the season with an eight win zero loss mark. The champions finished the year with a 10-3 record. In the final game Syracuse went on top. scoring two runs in the first inning. Leesburg came back with runs in their first and second inning. The Jackets then scored a run in the top of the sixth as Robbie Ladner was hit with a pitch after two were out. Brian Roberts pinch hitting for Greg Carpenter dropped a single over the pitchers head. Kevin Schrock, another pinch hitter, hit a spinning ball dow*n the first base line that the Leesburg Laities handicap tournament results The South Shore Ladies handicap tournament winner was Jackie Wortinger Sandy Walgamuth was the handicap runner-up. Leesburg had runners on first and third bases with one out in the last of the seventh but Deeter hit a line drive to short stop and Ladner threw to Beezley at third base to complete the double play. FIRST HOLE-IN-ONE AT BIG BOULDER COURSE Paul S. Wise. 1651 E Market. Nappanee, hit the first hole-in-one on the Big Boulder golf course, on the north edge of Milford on SR 15, Wednesday. July 28 Wise used a seven iron to make a 110-yard shot to the number seven par three hole. Wise was playing with James Nelson. Sr. and son. h Summer The Syracuse Little League travel team won the local fourway tourney held at the Rotary park recently. Syracuse defeated Pierceton in the first game 13 to 7. Syracuse pitcher Mark DeWitt pitched four innings of no-hit ball in this game. Syracuse batting stars were Chris Beezley with 3 for 3 and Ron Cripe with 3 for 4. Dave Workman scored three runs Hersha. Hough and Jones each had triples for Pierceton. The second game found Milford defeating Sidney 14-4 Leading batters for Milford were Eric Beer 3 for 3 with one home run and Pat Speicher 2 for 3 with one home run. Scott Bradley and Lane Evans each had hits for Sidney. Sidney won the consolation game defeating Pierceton 7 to 5. Snep, Bradley and Kinch each had hits for Sidney Rose, Hersha and Jones led the Pierceton team in batting. The championship game found Syracuse defeating Milford 7 to 6 in a very tightly fought contest. Milford scored two runs in the
second inning while Milford pitcher, Greg Weisser. was holding Syracuse to one hit and no runs through the first four innings. Milford stetched its lead to 6 to 1 going into the seventh and final inning. The Syracuse team staged a dramatic rally scoring six runs in the top of the seventh and held on to win the game Leading the Syracuse team in batting was John Vitanimi 2 for 2, Mark DeWitt 1 for 1, and Brian Kistler 1 for 1. Leading hitters for Milford were Kent Stichter 3 for 3 and Pat Speicher 2 for 2. Wawasee baseball team finishes its summer season The Wawasee high school baseball team ends its Northern Lake Conference season with nine wins and five losses. They tied Goshen for second place in the ratings. Plymouth was first with 11 wins and three losses. All-conference teams were named at Plymouth. Monday, July 26. Two members of the Wawasee team were selected for- - first team. They are Vince Rhodes, pitcher and Brian Smith, infielder. t Dan Crow was named to the second team as catcher and Greg Evans, third baseman. received an honorable mention.
Dewart lake, area skiers win at state
Kris Golden of Dewart Lake won the outstanding female skier award and was first overall when members of the Water Ski. Inc., were hosts for the Rolli Williams memorial state championship tournament held at Nellans Lake near Warsaw last Saturday and Sunday. Kris was first in girls jump and first in girls tricks and second in girls slalom. Other members of Water Ski, Inc., who placed at the tournament were as follows: Bud Roby — Second in boys jimp and fourth in boys slalom Mary Gagliano — Second in women’s slalom and fourth in women’s jump Jan Wade — First in women s tricks and third in women's tricks and third in women's slalom Susie Rector — First in junior girls trick, second in junior girls jump and third in junior girls slalom and first overall Tim Blackburn — Third in boys tricks, fourth in junior boys slalom and fifth in junior boys
