The lifestyle of a turtle and the incubation of a turtle egg have become a study of Roman Frye and his three grandchildren, and of Margo Koehlinger of Venetian Isle tr 1 Syracuse), Lake Wawasee The turtle shown in the above photo, as yet unnamed as near as we could determine, was observed on July 3 depositing a turtle egg in a small dugout it had made for itself, then covering the egg in the warm loose ground near the Koehlinger residence. And now comes the waiting period This photo was taken at the time the turtle egg was deposited and covered Those making the study are completely ignorant of a turtle's habits of propagation,* and would welcome any information m this regard Don't call us; call them. Well, such a group is being formed here. APPLE stands for the Association for the Preservation and Protection of Lands and Lakes and the Ecology The group hopes to eventually join the National Development Association and other like groups. More on this later. Crafts and booths at the Lakeland Youth Center will all be a part of an art fair this week end. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday, the fair will feature area artiste* work. The work will also be for sale. A portrait artist will sketch individual portraits while fair goers wait. Also, spoon ring, plant and leather craft booths will be doing business The fair is sponsored by the day care center board, which is planning a chicken barbecue in conjunction with the art fair's activities. "The day care center will receive 15 per cent of the profits.” says Gloria Eyer Most have sufficiently recovered from damages suffered in the storm which hit the Lakeland area last Wednesday night, dumping hail and nearly 44 inches of water (a reported eight inches at Nappanee) in a one-hour spanse. Water, water everywhere was the story as the force of water caused soil erosion, water in basements, electrical failure in some areas for five hours, and the Rotary’ ball field at the north edge of town was completely covered with a pond of water , - A lake would be more like It for residents of the middle and southern section of Syracuse. Uptown areas suffered water in basements and much work had to be done, but the overflow continued on south and in the area at the Rubber factory on South Huntington. residents were knee and waist deep in water and mud until the dam was opened to take away the excess. The Syracuse Cleaners is taking on a new and more modem look, with a drop ceiling, decorative Early American vinyl wall paneling, and new front counter space Pat and Warren Benson are owners of the business establishment, with Warren on duty fulltime now. Pat has joined the staff at First Charter Insurance.’ Don't forget the ever beautiful forthcoming annual flower show of theSyracuse-Wawasee Garden club! The show is set for August 5 from 2:364 in the afternoon and 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Friday. Aug. t. Much taient and beauty is shown here and will be at the high school We reported last week that the Syracuse Development Corp, was trying to fill the vacated room in Pickwick Ptace with 14 departments of arts and crafts. Lola (Mrs Bill) Pmney enthusiastically proclaimed Monday that 12 spots were already filled with a variety of interests ranging from plants, to paintings, to a newspaper and magazine stand The new establishment, opening in about three weeks, will be conveniently called, "Pickwick Place."
A message from the Syracuse Little League: “The Little League teams of Syracuse wish to thank Sam Gray of Gaston for his generosity in furnishing us with the sod for our ball field. We as little leaguers used it this year, and little leaguers for years to come will enjoy the benefits of your good will." Good news comes to us as part of a report to members of the Wawasee Property Owners’ Assn, in its August 1976 Newsletter, signed by president W. W. Spurgeon. Jr., in part as follows: "Two years ago Lake Wawasee was one of several Indiana lakes involved in a water sampling program conducted by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Association secretary-treasurer Jack C. Vander ford was advised in a recent meeting in Indianapolis with officials of the Indiana Stream Pollution Control Board and the Department of Natural Resources that Wawasee’s water quality was the best of all lakes tested in Indiana. “Though we are pleased with this new s there is no reason to be complacent. "The EPA study-was done on a mid-lake sampling basis. Thus it does not take into account local "problem areas” on which we have been working for a number of years. Nor does the EPA into account "fertilization" of the lake itself from agricultural and other runoff, septic system seepage, and treated effluent from two sewer systems (Oakwood Park and Wawasee Plaza). The EPA report is simply an indication of x cleanliness by water quality standards." Syracuse uptown merchants are planning four large. 4xß road signs, two north of town and two south of town, singing the merits cf shopping in uptown Syracuse Twenty uptown merchants are supporting the project, according to Lola Pinney. the real sparkplug in the project. Duane Gardner is operating a propeller shop on Chicago avenue WO WO. the popular Fort Wayne radio station covering this area, thought enough of our editorial in last week’s paper, "Do You Care Enough To Help?,” to repeat it on the air this morning (Wednesday). It concerned an effort by two Syracuse women in aiding a drive for a two-year-old cancer youth. Police chief Ron Robinson’s ckities cover a multitude of services. His latest service, conducted uptown Syracuse Tuesday afternoon, was to unlock the ear door for two young ladies from Michigan who had locked then «.eys mxbe car. A Chief Robinson had the car door unlocked in no time with the aid of a coat hanger. Guess to be a good police officer one must know the tricks of the trade.
