TENNIS CLUB — The construction of the Goshen Tennis club began on June U with plans calling for the building to be ready for play before October 1. ' The club, located at 14M Fairfield Ave., is a venture of Harlan Steffen and Tom McClairi of Syracuse. The building will have four indoor courts. The lighting will consist of 74 I.tOO watt metal halide indirect tennis court fixtures. Heating will be by 14 infra-red units and a ventilating system will be insulted for warm weather play. The men plan to have a full-time tennis professional to provide lessons and clinics, a well stocked pro-shop and children’s room with daytime child care will also be available. The locker rooms will have individual dressing areas and showers. Charter memberships are now being accepted. ■ .a Swim-a-thon is set at Wawasee

The boat was docked at Macy’s Slip on the south side of Lake Wawasee. The theft occurred sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. July 17 or 18.

Wawasee swimmers defeat Bremen 222-233 Saturday

Members of the Wawasee swim club traveled to Bremen on Saturday, July 17, and came home with a 222-233 victory over the host club. Following is a break-down of events: Fly — Girls eight and under. Wawasee girls lose district but gain berth to semi state

After nine straight victories, for the Wawasee girls two defeats Sunday afternoon meant the district championship. However, the top three teams advanced to the semi-state this week end at Elkhart. Games in Elkhart will be played at Riverview Park. Tourney Games On Saturday, the Warriorettes won over Chuck Manns by the score of 5-2. This was the third straight victory in the tournament for the Warriorettes. The big inning was the second when the girls scored four runs on four hits A walk to Martha Salazar, a hit by Mary Kitson, and an error loaded the bases. Tammy Schumn doubled home tw o runs. Brouwer knocked in the third with a ground out to second. The final run came on a single by Betsy Williams. Betsy had two hits for Wawasee. Phyllis Horvath pitched an excellent game for Wawasee, allowing only three hits. This was the ninth straight win for Horvath Kulp took the loss Thompsons-Wawasee In the first game Thompsons scored three runs in the first inning, two in the third and six in the fourth to easily win 12-3. Warriorettes Betsy Williams, Barb Brouwer, Nancy Shock and Marie Kitson had the only hits for the local team A total of 16 girls played in the game for Wawasee. This was the first toss of the season for Phyllis Horvath who pitched five innings with Wagoner finishing the last two innings. Miller got the win for Thompsons The second game was much closer than the final score indicates That score was 14-5. Wawasee led 4-3 going into the seventh inning. Thompsons scored two runs to take a 5-4 lead into the last of the seventh. In the last of the seventh, after Marie Kitson struck out, Kathi Replogle walked Tammy Schumn also walked, putting runners on with one out. Brouwer popped out to second and with two outs. Betsyhit a double to left center field, scoring Reptogle with the tying run while Schumn was called out

For Wawasee. Kim Wagoner started for Wawasee with relief from Horvath. Horvath took the loss while Swartz got the win, relieving Miller in the seventh. Betsy Williams and Mary Kitson had two hits for the local team. The girls are looking forward to the semi-state this week end. They will take a 9-2 record into the tournament. The team really appreciates the support of the fans.

Beginning tennis lessons given Tennis lessons have been given to 60 people by Larry Stidham, Syracuse, during the last six weeks at the Wawasee high school tennis courts. A tournament was held Friday, July 16, among those taking lessons. Winners in the girls division were Jan Lawson, first; and Darsee Staley, runner-up. Greg Carpenter won the boys division and John Locke was the runner-up. Stidham included in the lessons the basics of tennis and beginning strategies of the game. Former Syracuse residents participate in national races James Minor of Jamestown, son of Mrs. Everett Minor, and Harry Brinkman of Greenwood, son of Thelma Brinkman, both former residents of Syracuse, participated in the National Outboard Champion races held on Watts Bar Lake, near Kingston. Tenn., on July 3 and 4. • The races sponsored by the American Power Boat Association turned out 175 participants from all over the U.S. Both men were winners. Harry won the 18 races class C trophy and Jim won first in both the 18 races class D and E events. Jim also was overall high point scorer and besides his class D and E trophies brought home an outboard motor, the prize for high point racer.
