Ralph Rieff, son of Mr. and Mrs Robert Rieff, r 1 Warsaw, was awarded the 4-H state citizenship award. The award was presented during the state 4-H round-up held June 28. 29 and 30, at Purdue., Competition is narrowed down to one boy and one girl from each county. Contestants from each county then compete at the state level. There are five state finalists selected as the honor group. Then one boy and one girl are named as over all winners.. Ralph is a 1976 graduate of UM church youth have pizza party Approximately 22 young people attended a pizZa party held recently at North Webster United Methodist church Group singing was enjoyed * Adults in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Keith Henderson and Mr and Mrs George Shafer. Q Wawasee high school. He has been a member of Chain 0 Lakes 4-H club for nine years and a junior leader for five years. Mrs. Dick Rhoads is leader of the Chain O Lakes club. Don Watsons host party Mr. and Mrs. Don Watson. Lake Tippecanoe, were hosts for the Barbee Community church young adults Sunday school class party held June 27. A picnic lunch was served. The afternoon was spent swimming, water skiing, playing volley ball and enjoying other outdoor games and activities. Carl Smiths visit here over week end Mr. and Mrs Carl Smith. Indianapolis, spent the 4th of July week end visiting at the home of Mrs. Ruth Boyer, Leesburg . A family celebration was held on July 5 honoring Mrs Smith s birthday. She was presented with gifts A birthday cake was served

Don Hoover is new Kiwanis club member Don Hoover. Syracuse, was welcomed as a new member during the June 29 meeting of Lakeland Kiwanis club. The invocation was given by Charles Taylor. Thames Mausey, state representative, was guest speaker. He discussed the Indiana legislative program and procedure. Plans were announced for the July 10 golf outing. Art Osborn is in charge of collecting used eye glasses for needy persons. Guests present were Oliver Will and John McClure, Huntington; Ray Plummer. George Cumberland. Doc McCleary, Bob Loof and Bob Ashman, Warsaw; Bill Webster, Albert Loutzenhiser. Dale Bitting and Lou Shoemaker, Columbia City.

Rev. Weeks will direct institute Rev. John Weeks will be director of the United Methodist church junior high institute being held July 18 through 24 at Epworth Forest. Rev Weeks is former pastor of North Webster United Methodist church. Elementary camp to be July 25-31 North Webster United Methodist church elementary camp will be held July 25 through 31 at Lakewood. Tom Kuhn and Robert Fields will serve as directors.

If you are a summer resident, week end resident, vacationer, or work at one of the camps in the Lakeland area, you may not have heard the name of Laurel Jean Mitchell since last year. You might be surprised that you are hearing it again this year. It will be one year ago August 6 that the body of 17-year-old Laurel Jean Mitchell was found in the Elkhart River. She had been sexually assaulted jpd murdered She disappeared after leaving wort at her summer job at Cokesbury Inn. Epworth Forest. Nobody around here has forgotten Laurel Jean nor are they about to forget. Just mention her name to nearly anyone in the community and tears come to their eyes The police are still going after every wisp of a clue and fallowing it all the way.

No charge for use of Grassy Creek dam

It has come to the attention of Barbee Cottage Owners Association that children have been charging boat owners for help in opening and closing Grassy Creek dam. This practice, by any individual, is not authorized or encouraged in any way by the Cottage Owners Association. The lock at the dam is hand operated and must be opened and closed to allow boat passage. The association paid for construction of the dam and lock and

The Citizens for Law Enforcement Committee is still offering a SIO,OOO reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Laurel Jeans death. Why is someone afraid to come forward with the information that could bring the perpetrators of this uglydeed to justice? Is it a case of misplaced loyality, or is it fear? Maybe someone doesn’t realize that what they may have heard or seen is important. No matter how insignificant the information may seem it may be just the right piece of the puzzle the police need to complete the picture. Sometime between 10:10 p m. Wednesday night. Registration to be August 16 for choir school Registration for Epworth Forest children's choir school will begin August 16, starting at 2 pm., at the administration building, Epworth Forest. The school is open to children entering the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades of school. There is no charge, but participants are expected to be present for all rehearsals from 2:30 till 3:30 p.m. each day, August 16 through 20. The choir will sing at the August 20, 7:15 p.m. vesper service. Following the vesper service the children’s choir will present a recital. The public is invited to attend. Registration blanks may also be obtained at the office of North Webster United Methodist church.

Bicentennial sing out held on July 4th North Webster Church of God sponsored a "Bicentennial Sing-Out” held at 6:30 p.m., July 4th. The program was held at Camelot Square. Theme for the sing-along was “This Land-Our Land-God’s Land.” Camp Adventure to beAug. 8-14 North Webster United Methodist church junior high Camp Adventure is scheduled for August 8 through 14. The camp will be held at Epworth Heights with Neil Anderson as director. COMMUNITY NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rogers, North Webster United Methodist church, will be directors for the Senior High Bible Conference to be held August 1-7 at Oakwood Park. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Ball, Syracuse, were Sunday guests the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lester McGriff, Leesburg. Senior high youth from North Webster Church of God are going on a retreat July 16 and 17. Junior high youth from North Webster Church of God will hold a pizza and bowling party on July 10. A children’s swim party is scheduled for today, July 7, by youngsters from North Webster Church of God. Rev. and Mrs. A. C. Underwood, North Webster, will celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary ’on July 1. w ■ AUGSBURGER MEETS WITH GOVERNOR BOWEN — John B. Augsburger, Milford, candidate for state senate, met with Governor Otis R. Bowen, incumbent senators and senate candidates for the fall election recently in Indianapolis. After an orientation, the afternoon session consisted of an educational program including information on current election laws and opinion polls that were taken among Indiana voters. During the evening, a senate caucus started with a short speech byGovernor Bowen, congratulating new candidates on primary victories. Each incumbent senator gives his committee report on current studies being made. Augsburger was accompanied by his father, who is the 13th district’s present state senator.

14 YEARS AGO, JULY 12.1962 Mir. and Mrs. Richard Brunjes and Allen of Milford have returned from a six-day trip to southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. They traveled with a house trailer and stayed in the many state parks in the area. Among them were Brown County, Spring Mills and Cliffty Falls, all. in Indiana. A son was born July 4 to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lee Miller (rs r 1 Milford at Murphy Medical Center in Warsaw. He was named Jeffrey Jay and weighed eight pounds and 15 ounces. The Millers have another child Vickie Dee. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Airroll Miller of Warsaw, and Mr. and Mrs. Max Barton, also of Warsaw, are the maternal grandparents. Andrew Shearer of Milford is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Mynhier. Carol and Mark of Milford while his parents. Rev. and Mrs. Carl Shearer and children Debbie, Lydia, and Mark, are attending camp at Lake James near Angola this week. Mrs. Fred Slabaugh of Milford went to Windsor, Can., over the week end for a bowling tournament. Loretta and Rosetta, 14, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Chupp of Milford, attended the state convention for twins held at Woodburn last Saturday. 24 YEARS AGO, JULY 18, 1952 The Milford square dance group won a prize of $25 at the ice cream and square dance festival held at Rochester on Thursday, July 3. The event was sponsored by the Rochester Lions club. The Milford participants were Mr. and Mrs. John Fisher, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bucher, Mr. and Mrs. Rpy Schultz, and Mr. and Mis. Clyde Hamilton. The marriage of Miss Hazel Mishler, Goshen, and Joseph H. Griffith. Milford, was solemnized at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the country-home of Mr. Griffith’s son-in-law and daughter. starring Danny Kaye 30 YEARS AGO. JULYII. 1946 Wayne, Jr., the six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bucher, was painfully injured Monday evening. Menford Newcomer, who works for the Buchers was bringing in a load of wheat by the Lichlitner property. The little boy was trying to lift the tongue of the wagon which was on an incline, and was caught between the wagon and a truck that was being driven by Newcomer. The boy was rushed to a doctor in Syracuse and 15 stitches were taken in his head which was badly hurt. On Tuesday he was feeling improved: Mr. and Mrs. deorge Fox of Milford Junction this week announced the engagement of their daughter, Dorothy, to Samuel Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Adams of Nappanee. Maurice Beer brought the first load of wheat to the mill last Friday, July sth. Maurice is establishing a record for being the first to bring wheat to Milford every summer. On July 4th, Jack Forbing had a cucumber nine inches long in his garden. Maybe he’s trying to establish a cucumber record. 40 YEARS AGO. JULY 9, 1936 Miss Bernice Dippon, 18, of Milford, was one of the winners in the first elimination of the “Miss Goshen” bathing beauty contest held at the Jefferson theatre, last week. As the contest continues, contestants will be gradually eliminated until but one remains, who will be crowned as Miss Goshen. Last year, Miss Gwendolyn Fisher of Milford was the winner of the contest. Billie Little is the proud owner of a new pony, which was given to him by his parents on his birthday anniversary, last week. Big Double Ice Cream Cone for 5 cents at Baumgartner Case. -?Dr J. L. Hillery, who recently located in Milford, is a-graduate of Indiana Medical school, graduating in 1933, and then served as intern at the Indianapolis City hospital. Later, he served as resident physician at the same institution. Miss Mary Alice Kitson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Kitson of Syracse and formerly from this place, has gone to New York city to be an assistant teacher at Columbia University for six weeks.
