Lakeland special ed students participate in state events
The primary special education classes of the Syracuse elementary school participated in the state special Olympics held at Indiana state university on June 24-26 ? Eleven students competed in various track and field and swimming events and they won the following ribbons and medals: Rob Burky Third in 50-yard dash and third in softball throw Kip Birky — Second in long jump and fourth in softball throw Mary Jo Elhott — Second in 50yard dash and second in softball throw Joddy Fretz — Third in 220yard dash, second in, standing, long jump and seventh in 440yard relay Carla Henson — Eighth tn long jump and third in softball throw Jean Roder — Second in 25yard freestyle, first in standing long jump, third in 220-yard dash and seventh in 440-yard relay Donnie Kauffman — Fourth in 50-yard dash, seventh in softball throw and fifth in 440-yard dash Danny Schrock — Second m 50Saturday’s scramble results are given The winners of the Wawasee golf club Scramble held Saturday, July 3, with 32 were Joe Scheidel. Flotilla sailboat races first finishers listed As part of the annual Wawasee Flotilla, sailboat races were run on Lake Wawasee Saturday. July 3. at 1 p m Competition was held in five divisions, the catamaran, laser, open class, cruising boat and lightning with about SO boats participating The first place winners in arch division are Vance Lapp, catamaran; Paul Levinson, laser; Dave Irmscher, open class; Ken Hutchins, cruising boat; and Georgeann Buckingham, lightning. “It was a very pleasant racing day,” said Larry Baumgardt, head of the race. Charles Morrical and Evelyn Kilmer. /ftsvVvAin II o 'Summer / \§ecredtioy Major league results (rs the Syracuse Little League teams are given as follows : The State Bank nine upped their record to six wins and no losses with wins over the Lions 54 and Pilchers 7-0. Mark DeWitt was the winning pitcher over the Lions giving up nine hits, walking none and striking out eight. Ronnie Cripe had two hits for the winners. Chris Hare had a perfect night for the Lions with three hits in as many times up. In game two, a game shortened by rain, Chris Beezley was the winning pitcher giving up no hits, walking two and striking out five. Beezley and Ron Pollocks had two hits apiece. The Lions brought their record to four and two with an 8-2 win over the Rotary club. David Workman was the winning pitcher allowing only one hit and striking out 10 batters. Brian Kistler, Chris Hare and Darren Grisamer had two hits each for the winner. The Bank and Lions won tneir games on Saturday, July 3. Bank bested Rotary 7-3 while the Lions out slugged the Pilchers 13-2. Ron Cripe was the hitting hero for the Bank with three hits. Brian Brannock was the winning pitcher for the Lions giving up. only two runs and striking out nine Pilcher batters. Wawasee girls win, take first place in league
The largest crowd of the season was on hand last night ( Tuesday) to see the showdown between unbeaten Thompsons of Goshen and Wawasee’s girls. Both went into the contest with five wins and no loss records. The final score was 4-3 in eight innings. Wawasee took the victory and the lead in the league standings. Behind 2-0 in the seventh inning. the Warriorettes came back to score three runs to take a 3-2 lead going to the last of the seventh. Thompsons scored the tying run with two outs in the seventh. In the top of the eighth, Tammy Syracuse skiiers place in holiday tournament event Syracuse skiiers. members of the Water Ski Inc., walked away with several wins in the 500 Open Water Ski tournament in Fairland this past week end Tim Contose placed first in tricks, second in slalom and third in jump in the men’s I division. Kris Golden placed second in the slalom, third in tricks and third in jump in the girl’s division. Bud Roby placed second in jump, third in tricks and fourth in slalom in the boy’s division. Janet Wade placed fourth in the women's division.

TJ Schumn led off with a bunt single. She stole second and third and came home with the winning run on Betsy Williams’ sacrifice fly to deep left field. The winning pitcher was Phyllis Horvath. Swartz took the loss. Barb Brouwer led the local team with two hits, one a triple to deep right field. All the girls played excellent defense. Next on the schedule is the league tourney starting at 11 a m. Saturday. After Saturday’s game the girls return for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday. Both games will be played at the women's diamond behind the Goshen high school football field. * Fans are encouraged to attend and support the Wawasee team. The tourney is a double elimination affair.
