'Of Thee I Sing' continues at Wawasee
By BILL SPURGEON "Os Thee I Sing,” a George and Ira Gershwin concoction of the early 19305. is a popular musical ‘for revival these days And though the Enchanted Hills Playhouse company is putting on a better-than-just-passable version of it through this Saturday night at the bam east of Wawasee, the appeal of this particular play escapes this particular reviewer. Compared with the Enchanted Hills season opener of "Oklahoma!," whic|) one must admit was a musical theater milestone little more than a decade after "Os Thee 1 Sing." the latter is pale and both substance and content /

Yes, the music is tuneful and singable, and the good voices of this year’s Enchanted Hills troupe are augmented by a good pit orchestra with Rick Gossett waving the baton and his wife Barb the capable pacesetter at the piano. And yes, there were (and are) some good performers in the cast: Cheryl Stem is outstanding as Diana Devereaux, the beauty contest winner who is supposed to be married to President John P. Wintergreen as her prize; William Martin is a credible Wintergreen; and T Doyle Leverett is well-cast as bumbling Vice-president Alexander Throttlebottom But we have seen Enchanted t
Hills regulars Becky Borczon (who does become Wintergreen’s wife) and Doug Stark (who winds up as an unbelievable spoof on a French ambassador) in roles for which they were much more suited; their performances lacked firm direction and identity. Adding additional interest to the current production is the presence erf a number of local folks — not summer-long actors or actresses at Enchanted Hills — in secondary and minor roles. All, it might be said, looked and acted quite at home on the stage, and indicated there’s a good bit of latent theatrical talent in the Syracuse-Wawasee community. There is an abundance of enjoyable music, which in itself makes for a diverting evening. This writer had not heard "Wintergreen for President" since his Decca record of it developed a crack in the early 1940 s And to other Gershwin successes as “Love Is Sweeping the Country." and "Os Thee I Sing,’’ both from the original 1931 score, the musical attractiveness of the show has been beefed up with “But Not for Me,” “I’ve Got Rhythm.” “Bidin’ My Time,” “Embraceable You,’’ "Somebody Loves Me,” “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” and “Strike Up the Band." Thus it’s a tuneful two hours of entertainment, though not handled (perhaps sadly) by the Enchanted Hills group as an out-and-out spoof on the original. The production is augmented by colorful costuming, conventionhall decor throughout the theater, a Senate scene played in the audience, and utilitarian sets with a bit of whimsy thrown in. Because it is a 1931 show, the choreography is a bit tiresome, not because the folks do not do it well and with precision, but because it’s the kind of dancing that makes a state seem small rather than large. The book itself by George S. Kaufman and Mtirrie Ryskind might be called statttow. but there are laughs \ Like many shows of its type and vintage, "Os Thee I Sing" may suffer from the aura of being appealing as a period piece when read and discussed, but frankly, it does not play that well. Nonetheless, if you see it at Enchanted Hills, you’ll get your money’s worth with good music and good voices. Performances tiffs week are at 8 pm. Wednesday through Friday, and at 8:30 p m Saturday. Tippy directors meet sanitation, start dye testing The Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners board of directors, at their regular board meeting on Saturday, June 26. met with Robert Booher, the recently appointed sanitarian with the Kosciusko county board of health, and discussed their upcoming lake dye testing program Mr Booher, who has had considerable past experience in such programs, proffered many helpful suggestions for successful conduction of such tests He said that adequate prior publicity is important so that homeowners are aware of the program before someone knocks on their door and that the persons making the tests must be properly instructed sb that they do not antagonize the residents Neighbors should be enlisted to assist in looking for the dye indication in the lake since in some instances it maytake days to appear. James Benzenberg. the chairman of the association's water quality committee, discussed several suspected pollution locations with the board and Mr Booher and it was

agreed that during the following week dye tests would be conducted at these locations. Mr. Booher agreed to assist in this first effort by accompanying the association personnel on the visits. Frank Henzie, the chairman of the water safety committee, reported the Indiana Natural Resources Commission has recently issued an order to the enforcement division of the DNR to apply a 10 mile per hour speed limit on the channel between Oswego basin and the main lake. This has been an objective of the association for several years, since this channel is so narrow that skiing, which is presently permitted. is considered dangerous. The association’s annual meeting will be held in the Oswego Lions club community center on July 10 at 2 p.m. with Richard Lawrence. the president, appointed James Benzenberg, Arthur Cunningham. Myron Greene and Kenneth Lewis as a nominating committee. They will present a slate of officers and directors at the meeting to be elected to serve for the coming year. Timothy Bottoms stars in ‘A Small Town in Texas’ Fast rising young actor Timothy Bottoms adds another starring role to an already impressive list as he portrays a mavtfrack small-town resident, caught in a torrid relationship with the unwed mother of his child and a crooked sheriff who framed him into prison in American International's actiondrama. ‘‘A Small Town in Texas.” He shares star billing with Susan George and Bo Hopkins in this film which opens Friday at the Lake Theatre in Warsaw. p With a mere five previous films to his credit. Swedish family visits Milford relatives; see parts of United States for first time
In Sweden hotdogs and hamburgers are common, and there are even McDonalds much like America, “So not very much is different,” commented Torbjom Bergstrom. 18. from Hudiksuall, Sweden. Torbjorn and his family — sister Monica, 26. mother Birgit, and father Arne, just finished visiting with their mother’s cousin, Robert Nordin and family, r 2 Milford. The Bergstroms came to the states June 1 and spent time seeing sights in Chicago from a tour bus. There they saw the aerial view of Chicago from the Sears tower. “It was a very wonderful view.” said Monica, but added “I don't think we would like to live there.” The family spent three weeks in Los Angeles visiting their father’s sister. And in Hollywood they visited the Universal studios and saw the mechanical shark used to make the movie “Jaws”, which Torbjom declares wasn’t scary but ‘‘looks fun.” Disneyland ‘was another sight, along with Grauman’s Chinese Theater that the family visited while on the coast. But the family’s stay in Las Vegas was the best says Torbjom, who also lost the most money there. Las Vegas, Monica explained, had been a place they had heard a lot about in Sweden, through characters in old American movies. While on the coast the family managed to make a brief stay in Tiajuana. This trip was the first vacation the family has taken together and the first time they have been to the United States. Monica related that the family lives on a farm near Hudiksuall and couldn’t ’’leave the farm until now, since they no longer have animals on it. On the farm the family lives in a house which has been in the family since 1585. The house is described by Monica as “old and Tippecanoe Audubon Society plans trip Sunday, July 11, has been set for the monthly field trip of the Tippecanoe Audubon Society. question. "Anyone who isn’t constantly changing and growing isn’t really alive.” Miss Welch, currently starring in 20th Century Fox’s “Mother, Jugs And Speed.” explains. “To admit you’ve changed isn’t to say you were originally negative and are now positive. It simply means you are regularly absorbing more aspects of the human experience. It would be a crime for someone in my position not to be growing daily. I’m exposed to new, stimulating people, placed ideas. “Those who command my respect are people who manage

Monica commented that “They) the Swedish people) have been waiting for a lot of years.” Now in Sweden the country is in die midst of being the “Land of the Midnight Sun” with 24 hours of continuous daylight for two and one-half months. THOUSANDS GATHER — Many thousand*, according to some estimates, gathered at the fish hatchery on Lake Wawasee Saturday night to witness the fireworks put on annually by the Cromwell fire department. to grow and change despite the fact they exist in static situations. A man who works at the same job year after year, or a woman whose boundaries are defined by her home and family — when they expand their horizons, that is a fantastic achievement.” How has Raquel Welch changed? “1 enjoy everything more now than ever before,” she answers. “I enjoy my career, but I’m not consumed by it. For the first time. I can savor some of the rewards I’ve earned. A million dollars isn’t very valuable unless you spend some of it. Only recently. I've started going on buying sprees, indulging in clothes and luxuries. The list of things I enjoy now is endless, including myself and other people. I find I don’t demand the perfection from the world that I once did." Solid acceptance from her Hollywood peers is undoubtedly one reason for Miss Welch’s altered outlook. She is now what she always wanted to be —a major film actress — and achieved the position without binding her breasts or otherwise denying her physical blessings. Candidly referring to the initial phase of her career as the “struttin’ my stuff" period, she ultimately drew favorable critical mention in “Kansas City Bomber” and “The Last of Sheila.”

Returning to Milford during a thunderstorm, lightning struck in front of the car. And during the storm "We were afraid we would blow away,” remembers Monica. Monica and Robert explained that storms in Sweden are not so severe. While at Amish Acres, the family saw a dish there that came from — Sweden.

The family members have collected souvenirs during the trip. Torbjorn, got a T-shirt from Las Vegas, his favorite spot; Arne purchased a straw hat fror\ Tiajuana, and Birgit bought a cloth with Amish life from Nappanee.
