What began as an experiment could have resulted in tragedy had it been the real thing. Gordon Lopez, box 255 r 1 Syracuse, and friend Barry Roby, box 259 r 1 Syracuse, decided to go canoeing Saturday about 2 pm on Lake Wawasee. After they were on the lake the tw o decided to tip over the canoe and wait to see if anyone came to help them. So they tied the paddles to it. overturned it, life preservers on their backs, hung on to the boat and waited and waited and waited — with no one coming to their rescue. The two boys expected someone to “offer to tow us in or do anything and nobody would," explained Lopez "People just went right by us and went on." Both boys agreed not to yell and scream for help fearing when people learned they were purposely staging the "accident" would perhaps not respond to a real call for help at a later time. The boys reported their parents were not surprised by the nonactions of other boaters. Roby and Lopez explained that they have helped several boaters on the lake without being asked, by giving them a tow. What should the boaters do when they see a canoe overturn or other accident? Conservation officer for Kosciusko county. Steve Seemeyer said boaters should first stop near the scene of the accident. Next, if the people do not have life preservers, to throw them some until they can get to your boat and be helped inside the craft The next step would be to take the people to shore or help them right the craft in the case of a canoe or sailboat tipping over. If over SSO damage has occured to a craft, the conservation officer must be notified. Also, if an injury has been sustained or loss of life occurs, ilnmediately contact the county conservation officer Seemeyer explained that the officer then talks to any witnesses of the accident and gives them an accident report form to fill out. These forms are then mailed by witnesses to Indianapolis Any decisions about the accident are made by the conservation department of which Seemeyer said. “It would be up to us to decide if it was negligence on their part "
