captured by the Clark expedition in 1778. After the Louisiana Purchase the town became the capitoi of Illinois Territory, and then the first state capitoi, from 1818-20 Fort Kaskaskia State Park and Memorial contain a concentration of landmarks, including a park with year round camping and recreational facilities. Interestingly, the town itself is now an island due to constant flooding from the river, and is the only Illinois town to be found west of the mighty Mississippi. 2 Louisville. Ky. — Cross the Ohio River into Louisville and you’re stepping into a little bit of the old South and frontier days mixed together Daniel Boone and George Rogers Clark lived and settled there and Abe Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson both spent time in elegant Farmington House, once a country estate, now in the city’s heart For river lovers. Louisville offers a paddlepowered. triple decked sternwheeler named “The Belle Os Louisville”. And of course there's horse racing at Churchill Downs 3. Mammoulh Cave National Park. Ky. — More than 250 million years ago south central Kentucky was covered by an inland sea A gradual uplifting of the earth’s surface drained the sea and rock layers exposed to erosion began turning into caves Mammouth Cave, the mam attraction in this park, is connected to a cave system 144 miles long, making it the largest cave system known to man. Besides the spelunking fun. the park is well forested and located on the Green River, noted for its aquatic activities 4 Saint Joseph. Mo. — On Apni 3. 1860. a rider left the Pikes’ Peak Stables in Samt Joe on the ffrst leg of a 2.000 mile ride to California . and the Pony Express was in operation That ’s the high point in this western Missouri town's heritage, but it’s also noted as the place where Jesse James was slain by a member of his own gang in 1882. Legend says Jesse was shot in the back while hanging a picture There’s also the Patee House, an early hotel which is now a museum, the Robidoux Home.

the Samt Joseph museum (with a large collection of Indian artifacts); and “Lover’s Lane”, immortalized by Eugene Field. 6. Pea Ridge National Military Park. Ark. — Just north of Fayetteville near the Missouri border lies this battlfield, often referred to as "The Gettysburg of the West”, because the Union victory here lost all of Missouri and north Arkansas to the Confederacy. The tour center offers the usual battlefield amenities, and this park stands as an unusually interesting historical point in the middle of the Ozark region 6. Nauvoo, 111. — This old river town is possessed by an unusual history— it was built in the mid 19th century by Mormons, who then were forced to flee in 1846. Many of their religious artifacts and buildings remain, including homes once occupied by Brigham Young and Joseph Smith (the Mormon prophet who was killed by a mob in Carthage. 111.), a
