Whether it lives up to our expectations depends less on what’s outside than what’s inside. Human character tends to shape the 12:35-48 events and experiences of life. Dr. W. R. Shank and daughter work in Dominican Republic
Dr. Wendel R. Shank accompanied by daughter Susan returned Saturday, June 19, from two weeks in the Dominican Republic. They were part of a volunteer eyecare team composed of optometrists, ophthalmologists, nurses and support personnel from all over the USA and Canada who went at their own expense to provide eyecare services to the needy native peoples. The team was able to see 4300 patients, of which about 3500 received glasses and 100 had surgery. The glasses were used ones such as those collected in Syracuse last winter. Dr. Shank provided visual exams and Susan obtained visual acuities. All work had to be done in Spanish, the native language. Dr. Shank had memorized enough phrases in Spanish to do the exams but he stated, "I was

alright as long as they just answered my questions, but if they attempted to say anything else to me. I was lost." Susan has studied Spanish at Wawasee high school and got along very well. The patients arrived at 2 o'clock in the morning and stood in line all day hoping to be seen by a doctor. The eye problems were seldom minor and most were severe. A pair of glasses in the Domincan Republic costs a month's salary for a laboring man and consequently most have to go without. The medical project director said people could keep coming like this for years » and they can not take care of all the problems. The project is sponsored twice a year as part of the interdenominational Medical Group Missions program of the Christian Medical Society.
