Parade set for 4 p.m. Saturday —
31st Mermaid Festival underway
'Kiddies Day' activities happen today at Mermaid Festival
Over $3,000 worth of awards will be given to winners who participate in the famous 31st annual Mermaid parade at North Webster this Saturday, June 26. The parade is among the 10 best small town parades in the United States. *
Today (Wednesday) is “Kiddies* Day” at the festival which will feature Archie Griffin's crowning as the new King of Sports From 1 to 4 pm Key City show* will have reduced prices on the midway for children Archie Griffin, two-time Heisman trophy winner, will be at the corona bon and reception for him as the 1976 King of Sports, from 5 to 7 p m at the International Palace of Sports Youth League eliminations will start at 6 p m , when the Cube parade lineup forms at the Camelot Square parking lot. The Cutie parade will then begin at 7 pm. south of the stoplight It is open to children of all ages. Grand Marshall of the parade will be Archie Griffin who will crown the winners at the Cutie contest held at the school gym at 8 pm tonight A pony pull will be held at the fairgrounds, sponsored by the 4County Pony Pulling association at 6 pm. Thursday Anyone m Kosciusko county may enter a pony 48 inches and under At 7 p m Thursday evening Youth League finals will start simultaneously with the talent contest at Camelot Hall and the can hunt at the fairgrounds Key City shows will open their midway at 4 p m Friday And the talent contest will begin at Camelot Hall at 7 p m At 8 pm. the Queen of the Lakes swimsuit competition will begin at the school gym. Also at 8 pm motorcycle races will start at the Trojan race track three miles south of North Webster on state road 13. Saturday's Events On the closing day of the festival. Saturday, the Mermaid Festival band contest will be at 1 p.m. north of the festival grounds The midway will be open from 1 to 4 p.m., with Key City Shows having “Bracelet Day.** Good on most rides will be coupons, accompanied by three dollars, which allow one to ride for three hours Also at 1 p.m Saturday, the fifth annual Tournament of Knights will start at the north end of the school. Following at 2 p.m. will be a ski show by the Webster Lake Ski club, which can be viewed from the west shore of the lake The 31sjt annual Mermaid parade will begin at 4 p.m. Awards totaling over $3,000 will be giyen for the best units entered in it. Another ski show by. the Webster Lake Ski club will start at 7 p.m. at the same location as the afternoon performance. Following the ski show will be motorcycle races, again at the Trojan track. Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m. the finals of the Queen of Lakes pageant will begin at the school

Archie Griffin, two-time Heisman trophy winner is the 1975 Kings of Sports and will be in North Webster today During his stay he will serve as Grand Marshall of tonight s Cube parade and will crown the winners Earlier in the evening he will attend the coronation as king and the reception for him from 5 to 7 pm The Columbus. Ohio, native is the all time leading major college runner in football He has surpassed the Ohio State university 1.000 yard mark for three straight seasons Gnffm also set an all-time collegiate rushing record with more than 100 yards m 31 consecutive regular season games

Shown above on the left, Larry Singleton, treasurer of Enchanted Hills Community Association, is presenting a check for SSOO to Mrs. John Nemeth, secretary of the Lakes Study Fund. David Stoops, president of the study group, expressed Ms thanks to this early response to the appeal for funds. Mr. Singleton, in presenting the check, said Ms Enchanted Hills group is mindful of the importance of keeping the lakes dean, commenting that without the lakes the entire community would suffer.
Flotilla set for July 4 Plans continue to unfold as committees put the finishing touches on the Bicentennial year’s Wawasee Flotilla. Events will be held both July 3 and 4 in the Syracuse community with the big parade around the lake slated to get underway Sunday afternoon at 1 sharp. Other events of the week end include a canoe race, a sailboat race, ski show, the annual Flotilla dance, a boat-in worship service, fire works displays both nights, a fly-over and Green Berets jump.
Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football league. Griffin was Cincinnati’s second firstround choice and the 24th player taken in last month's draft. The King of Sports award goes to the most outstanding competitor of the year in any sport who is an inspiration to youth and the recipients of the youth Career awards presented during the Mermaid Festival. Kiwanis International and the International Palace of Sports jointly sponsor the annual King of Sports award. The three previous Kings of Sports selected by the program are Mark Spitz. 1972; O. J. Simpson, 1973; and Hank Aaron. 1974. Griffin was selected athlete of the year by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Important land use meeting next Tuesday
Bill Beemer, president of the Turkey Creek township plan commission, is urging everyone in the township interested in the mapping of a land use program to attend the important meeting at the high school commons at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. June 29. At the meeting "Bud” Latz of the Fort Wayne firm of Latz and Associates will be present to conduct the discussions. .• The meeting is the second in a series of thi*ee. as required by law, and maybe four to give the plan ; Commission maximum input prior to coming up with a land use program for the Syracuse town board to adopt. Lakeland board approves Lambert Wawasee head basketball coach
The Lakeland Community School Corporation board last night (Tuesday) accepted the appointment of Jerry Lambert as head basketball and head baseball coach at Wawasee high school for 1976-77. Lambert is presently on the Wawasee high school staff in the capacity of physical education instructor and junior varsity basketball coach. In other matters taken up by the board, Dave Carey Construction. North Webster, with the low bid for maintenance buildings at the Syracuse school and North Webster schools, was approved at respective costs of $9,813 and $8,418 Also accepted was the single bid by Village Plumbing to install gasoline pumps at the Milford and North Webster schools for $12,950 The electrical work will be done by Delp Electric, Plymouth, for $1,890 as previously approved by the board. Curbings around the gas pumps will be done by Phend and Brown, along with blacktopping the North Webster playground at a cost of $2,860 which was accepted by the board. Bids for tuck pointing, removing old mortar between bricks and replacing it, at the Milford junior high were reviewed but action on them tabled until further clarification of a bid by Harry Doty at $575 can be made. Lee Cory honored for 65-year ministry On Father’s day, June 20, the Bethel Church of the Brethren in Milford paid special tribute to Rev. Lee Cory, who will have i served the ministry for 65 years on July 30. He was licensed on that date in 1911 and has served as full-time, part-time or interim pastor at Wakarusa, Syracuse, Bremen, Turkey Creek and his home church, Bethel, since that time. He still preaches on Sunday morning sometimes when the local pastor is away. During many of the years Cory served the ministry without monetary compensation since the Church of the Brethren was one of the last groups to go to paid-ministry. Cory was married to the former Clara Neal in 1911 and they enjoyed 55 years before her death in 1971. Mrs. Cory was involved in the music of the church and was a , great help to her husband. Their son, Neal, lives with wife, Arlene, on r 1 Milford as does a granddaughter, Mrs. Fred (Diane) Weisser. Cory also has two grandsons, Dennis of Marburg, Germany and David of Evansville. Doug, Greg, Brad and Kathy Weisser of r 1 Milford are his great-grandchildren. The Bethel pastor, J. Duane Beals, conducted a “This Is Your Life” type program in honor of (Continued on page 2)
