'Leesburg Days 1833-1976' chronicles town's history
A new, historical book about Leesburg has been published and is available for sale in the area, called “Leesburg Days 18331976.” Many residents of the community have contributed pictures and information for the book. And several Leesburg women did
research in area libraries to collect information. The book begins with the origin of the community and purchase of the land by Levi Lee, who the town is named for. In the 16 pages, the town’s history was condensed to summaries of schools and past graduates, past businesses and those today which total 50. .Also covered are several fires which threatened to destroy the town and some lumber yard fires. < [ A history of the town’s newspapers is also included, along with old families and the laying out of the plots of land making up the community. Interesting items about the community’s history are in another section of the book. One such item is that the first thing sold over a counter in Leesburg was a plug of tobacco. . The publication closes with this passage: "We the Leesburg Merchants in this our Bicentennial year, have endeavored to share this historical tour from the days of Dominique Rousseau in the 1820 s to July 4. 1976 ” Leesburg man booked Friday A Leesburg man. John E. Edwards, 18, r 1 Leesburg, was booked last Friday at the county jail on charges of illegal consumption of alcoholic beverages and public intoxication. Tippy owners hire safety patrol personnel for summer
The directors of the Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners, at their regular board meeting on May 29, voted to hire supplemental safety patrol personnel this summer. They have been instrumental in obtaining increased patrol time from the department of natural resources in the past and have been assured of patrol personnel at least part of every day this summer. However, the number of officers available and the number of lakes to be covered combine to make full evening and night patrol coverage impossible. The men to be employed by the association will be legally empowered and will spend much of their time during the late evening hours, when illegal speeding and skiing has been common. Frank Henzie, the chairman of Driver cited following mishap Curtis Eby, 21, of 406 North Harrison, Syracuse, was cited last week by county officers following a one-car mishap in Kosciusko county. Eby told officers he was eastbound on CR 1050 north and swerved to miss an animal causing him to loose control of his car. Damage to his car was set at S7OO, with SSO to a mailbox belonging to Sandra Smith, SSO to a highway sign and SIOO to a fence and yard at the F. D. Staley property. The citation was for leaving the scene of a property damage accident and reckless driving. ISRAELI TOLL Israel announced Nov. 6, 1973, that I,$M of its soldiers had died in the Middle East War.
the water safety committee, reported that he had attended a meeting of the natural resources commission and that they have adopted an ordinance allowing the department to selectively zone and regulate areas of natural lakes. This authority has in the past applied only to reservoirs, where areas have been set aside for fishing and swimming and it is hoped that now speeding in congested and dangerous areas may be prevented. George Buckingham, a resident of Goshen and Lake Tippecanoe, was introduced as a new member of the board by Richard Lawrence, president and was assigned duties as the legal representative of the association. It was agreed that whenever illegal operations, such as improper septic system installations, are brought to their attention, Lawernce and Buckingham are authorized to take immediate action. This is in accordance with the long avowed purpose of the organization to protect the lake environment and purity of the lake waters.
