Petitions presented on farm inheritance reforms
WASHINGTON — Petitions calling for reform of farm inheritance tax laws were presented to the house ways and means committee last week by Congressman Floyd Fithian. The Hoosier lawmaker met Friday with ways and means chairman Al Ullman and turned over petitions including more than 3,250 signatures. “I think this demonstrates the widespread support for inheritance tax reform among Hoosiers." Fithian told Ullman. "At least in my district, the people are telling congress to act on this matter — and do it now.” Fithian had placed petitions in various locations throughout the 14 counties of the second district several weeks ago. In March, he testified before the ways and means committee in support of inheritance tax reform, and presented petitions at that time containing more than 2,000 signatures. , “This brings to more than 5,000 the number of citizens who are concerned enough to sign these petitions and have their voices December 21 200 YEARS AGO The New York Provincial Congress publishes the names of 750 Tories in Queens County who had refused to appear before the body as "disaffected" people.
heard in Washington,’’ Fithian explained after his meeting with Ullman. “I fully agree with them, and I plan to continue my drive to make taxes more fair for the average family.” Fithian is co-sponsoring the family farm inheritance Act, which would raise the inheritance tax exemption on farms from $60,000 to $200,000. He also has voiced support for inheritance tax reform in other sectors of the economy. “If we re going to preserve the family farm, no other single item is more important than changing our farm inheritance tax laws,” Fithian commented. “Congress must fulfill its responsibility to the people by passing inheritance tax reform legislation this year.”
