With names like the Village Green, King Arthur’s court, Camelot hall and the Tournament of Knights. North Webster is like entering a fantasy world. “This area is quite a bit like that of King Arthur,” explains Homer Shoop The lakes region has dales, lakes and youth and religious camps much like those depicted in the myth But it wasn't always so The village of 500 was just an average lake community and resort area But Shoop had an idea taking shape in his mind in 1967 Why not complement the Queen of the Lakes, chosen during the Mermaid festival each year sponsored by the North Webster Lions club with- an annual King of Sports’* And to tie it all together have the community adopt a Camelot theme. "It wasn't particularly easy." reflected When he presented the idea to citizens at a town meeting. “They thought I was crazy ” Even though the concept stunned them at first. Plans for the coming fourth annual “King of Sports” coronation reception, in honor of Ohio State's three time All American running back. Archie Griffin, were announced today by Alice Rmker. chairman of the entertainment committee of the International Palace of Sports youth foundation. Griffin is the fourth annual King of Sports selected in support of the International Palace of Sports youth program. Previous sports personalities so honored are: Mark Spitx. 0. J. Simpson and Hank Aaron. Headed by ABC’s sportscaster. Chris Schenkel. the foundation was chartered in 1970 for the purpose of inspiring youths to better citizenship and higher achievement by linking career awards to sports personalities and to the legend of Camelot. Kiwanis International’s 7.000 service clubs cooperate in selecting deserving students in local communities as recipients of "King of Sports” career awards, and who are titled "Knights and Ladies of the Year”. They are Ralph Reiff, David Rider, John Clay, Duane Miller and Eddie Drudge. Reiff, a 1976 graduate of Wawasee high school, will compete as the Knight of Wawasee Letterman's club. He is a three-year letterman in football, was all-conference and made the prep All-American team. Reiff was also a three-year letterman in track and lettered one year in basketball. Rider, a 1976 graduate of Jim town high school, will be entered as the Knight of Jimtown. He lettered in football and basketball and was allconference in both sports. He was honorable mention all-state for small schools in football. Clay, a 1976 graduate of Warsaw high school, will compete as the Knight of Warsaw Jaycees. Clay is a letterman in basketball. A' 1976 graduate of West Noble, Miller is competing as the Knight of West Noble Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is a twoyear letterman in track and lettered one year each in baseball and football. Drudge, a 1976 graduate of Tippecanoe Valley high school, will compete as the Knight of Tippecanoe Valley. He is a fouryear letterman in track and was the most valuable player in track for 1974 and 76. These contestants, along with the previous eight, will compete far the Sir Lancelot du Lac and Sir Galahad titles and for the Schenkel Excalibur Sword and Mollenhour Holy Grail Chalice. Lincoln program given at birthday celebration
The Bethel Church of the Brethren in Milford held its annual birthday celebration for all members of the church on Sunday evening and also observed' the 200th birthday of our country. The program for the evening was presented by Vernon Zurcher. Wawasee high school history teacher. He gave a very interesting and informative slide program on the Lincoln Heritage Trail in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois with the group learning some little known facts about our 16th president. Ruth Angle, president of the Women’s Fellowship of the church, presented a short preprogram with facts about the beginnings of the revolutionary war and the state of Indiana. She conducted a quiz on famous persons from Indiana and Dr. Homer Burke ably assisted her in reading James Whitcomb Riley ’s poem “Little Orphan Annie.” An antique table was enjoyed by those present. Various members brought treasures to share with the others. Interesting material on places of interest and facts about our Hoosier state were available. z Each person present was asked to draw his own place jnat in the Bicentennial theme. ’The art work and thoughts involved were unique and individual to see. Several old songs were sung with
Mrs. Delbert Moneyheffer as song leader and Mrs. Fred Weisser at the piano. Happy birthday to everyone was sung by the group with special recognition of Mrs. Weisser and Mrs. Dessie Troup who had birthdays on the date of the program.
