Fergusson of the Merry Lea Environmental Center directs the project with the intent of seeking practical means to improve the 500 natural lakes in northeastern Indiana. The 1947 Indiana law reads, “The state of Indiana . . . shall hold and control all of the (public fresh water) lakes in trust for the use of all of its citizens for fishing, boating, swimming . . . and no person owning lands bordering any such lakes shall have the exclusive right to the use of waters of any such lake . . Some of the control of the lakes is given to the state department of natural resources and its various divisions, some to the stream pollution control board, and some to the state board of health The county and local governments control the land around

the lakes and therefore can affect the lakes. Public Sessions Three public sessions have been held at the Merry Lea Center on the subjects of government, lake ecology, lake cottages and the forthcoming session, the last of the series, will be of interest to members of lake associations. Dr. Peter Hippensteel of TriState college is president of the Steuben County Lakes council and will conduct subjects bordering on weed control, how to resolve conflicts among different interest groups, provide services, and other subjects pertaining to lake management. County councils will also be discussed. County councils are involved with activities with the local plan commission and sanitarian. They have worked on water quality monitoring and seeding funds for formation of sewer districts, among other activities.

The lake association session will be held June 12, 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Merry Lea Environmental Center. To reach the location, travel two miles south out of Wolflake on SR 109, west on Noble CR 350 S to CR 500 W. The Merry Lea sign will then point north to the center. The Merry Lea site includes 800 acres of lakes, marshes, swamps, meadows and woodlands in the heart of northeastern Indiana's lake country. The site and facilities may be used by schools, churches, youth groups, clubs and civic organizations. Individuals and families are welcome to visit the center.
