14 YEARS AGO. MAY 17.1976 According to a statement made by Charles Myers, president of the Milford Alumni Association, Jack Wells of the Pickwick Lounge in Syracuse will cater this year’s alumni banquet. David Cory, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Cory of r 2 Milford, placed second in the essay contest which followed the annual trip to the Shrine Circus at Fort Wayne earlier this year. Some 1,000 third graders from county schools made the trip this year under the supervision of members of the Kosciusko Shrine club, sponsors of the circus. David received a miniature fez and a cash prize for his second place winning essay. Miss Lois Evans is his teacher Mr. and Mrs Virgil Wuthrich of Chicago are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday evening in a Chicago hospital. Schricker, Governor of Indiana, will be the principal speaker at the annual mass meeting at Camp Alexander Mack Sunday afternoon and evening The afternoon session, at which the Governor speaks, will begX at 2:30 o’clock His topic is “Our American Heritage of Church and State.’’ Ground for Milford’s new Town Hall was broken this week on the Main street lot frequently referred to as the Sparklin park The contract was given to Reliable Builders, Inc., of Warsaw, several months ago, but building has been delayed because of the death of a member of the firm. Work on the hall is
expected to start within a few days. The nine acre orchard three and a half miles east of Milford, owned by Lloyd Pyle for the past several years, has been sold to Jacob E. Kern. Jr., of Syracuse. The Pyles are moving to Richmond, Ind. this week, and the Kerns will move to their newly acquired home property soon. Mr. and Mrs. Bebon Crafton, son James and daughter Diana, and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Crafton, and son Clark and daughter Carolyn attended the Wakarusa high school commencement exercises Tuesday evening. Guy Bolen, a nephew of the two Mr. Craftons, was one of the 30 graduates. 30 YEARS AGO. MAY 16. 1946 On Tuesday night Lark Becker, chairman of the committee in charge of raising funds for improvement of the west side park, was happy to announce they had more than made their quota. The iquota for the drive was set at SI,OOO and Becker said they had raised $1,130. He added that a little money might still be out, but that he had close account of tickets sold, and most of it was already in. Mr. Becker said the response to the appeal of the Lions club .for financial aid in their efforts to better our community, were wonderful He was happy with the results A potluck dinner was given in honor of the 21st birthday anniversary of Lawrence Lingofelter at his home at 413 N. 7th street, in Goshen on Saturday night. Lawrence's birthday was on Friday. Those present were his father, Melvin, of Milford, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Lingofelter and son Jan of Warsaw and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gillis and two daughters, Carol and Cherry of Nappanee It was two months ago Saturday that Lawrence returned home from overseas duty. Miss Marilyn Fuller is home for the summer after attending Mac Murray College at Jacksonville. 111. 40 YEARS AGO. MAY 21, 1936 Transactions were closed last week whereby approximately 11 acres bordering on Waubee lake became property of the town of Milford, the tract being purchased by the Milford Conservation Club and deeded to the townThe town board of trustees will make application immediately for a federal project under which they propose to build a municipal bathing beach, two fish rearing ponds, a roadway leading from the park to the highway and to improve the grounds in general for a public park. A number of friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Estep, Saturday evening to surprise the latter who had celebrated her birthday on Thursday and who was presented
with a beautiful gift. Three tables of bridge progressed and prizes awarded to Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Kelly, Mrs. Roy Treesh and Carlyle Barnes. A picnic lunch was enjoyed. Mr. and Mrs. George Coy of New Paris are the parents of a son, Robert W’illiam. born May 9. Effects of the severe cold last winter on Indiana's wheat crop was revealed by a Peru professor Thursday who stated that 11 per cent of the acreage sown to wheat last fall had been abandoned and that which remained showed a condition of 60 per cent normal. TO GRADUATE MAGNA CUM LAUDE — Joel Burkholder, formerly of Syracuse, now living at 621 Pringle Dr., Goshen, will graduate magna cum laude, with honors in music and with a diploma in organ this week end from Carthage college, a Lutheran liberal arts school in Kenosha, Wis. Joel participated in many activities while at Carthage. He was a member of the varsity tennis team, active in intramural sports. Tau Delta Psi social fraternity, chamber and swing choir and as a church organist. He was named to Who’s Who in American colleges and universities two consecutive years; received the Blue Key, an honorary award for outstanding college men; and was consistantly on the dean’s list. Joel will be continuing his education in the fall at the Lutheran school of theology in Chicago as he prepares for the ordained ministry. Joel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burkholder of Goshen, former residents of Syracuse. Unemployment claims increase The unemployment insurance total increased by 1,864 last week to 64,076, according to the Indiana Employment Security division Division director John F. Coppes said that initial and continued claims rose primarily due to the full work week after the primary election day closing of the agency’s offices. Initial claims were up by 534 to 6,233, while all regular claims increased 1.171 to 45.779. Coppes said extended benefit claims numbered 12.759. up 283; federal supplemental benefit claims were 10 fewer at 571 and special unemployment assistance claims totaled 4.967. up 420.

Scout circus 'Heritage '76'
A total of 1,500 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Explorers will participate in “Heritage ’76”, a Bicentennial year salute to the United States, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. June 12, in the Allen county memorial coliseum. Termed a “Scout Circus” because simultaneous activities are planned at various places on the coliseum floor, the giant pageant will include Scouts and their leaders from throughout the Anthony Wayne Council area. The area includes eleven (11) Northeastern Indiana counties — Adams, Allen. DeKalb, Huntington. Jay, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wells, and Whitley — 76 Scout troops, 77 Cub packs and four Explorer posts will participate. Feature acts will present a patriotic view of American history dating to pre-Columbus time. The 24 hour program will emphasize the contributions of Scouting in the growth of the nation. “The circus will carry a ‘banner of freedom’ theme," according to Lloyd Miller, general chairman of the event. “Flags of various nations whose people settled in our country and of important events such as Revolutionary and Civil War battles will be presented throughout the program.” Following an opening ceremony simulating Scouting's 14th World Jamboree held at Oslo, Norway, last August, the circus will open with a series of individually spot-lit scenes, portraying the settling of the country. Each immigrant group had its own identifying banner and these flags will be prominent in the various scenes. They will include the flags of the Vikings, Columbus and his fleet, the English at Jamestown, the Dutch in New York Harbor, and the first flags of the Revolutionary War, Sons of Pomona Grange members attend church as group The St-Mar-Kas Pomona Grange held their annual “Go to church Sunday” on May 23. A group of 27 Grange members attended the Salem Methodist church in Bremen. After church the members gathered at a restaurant in Wakarusa for dinner, then went to the New Tamerach Grange hall for a social afternoon of entertainment. Mrs. Otho BonDurant and Mrs. Miller planned the events for the day. Door prizes went to Mrs. Helene Faulkner, Mrs. Robert Oakley, Mrs. Carrie Pritch, Herman Miller, Herb Marburger and Otho BonDurant. Refreshments of ice cream, cake and coffee were served by the ladies from each of the Granges present. The next meeting will be June 15 in the Bremen Grange hall at 8 p.m. Guests present were Mrs. Rose Mitchell, Mrs. Helen Faulkner and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller from the Waubee Grange.
