FIRST ONE IN Choking is not incurable Contrary to popular belief, “choking” (i.e., double-fault-ing on match point) is not terminal. Although some players suffer their entire career, others work hard at curing this malady. The only way to tame match-point jitters is to play a lot of match points. Here are some suggestions: (1) Play as many different players as possible. Seek them out in tournament, challenge matches, pick-up matches, etc. Continually facing the new and unexpected will help make you more perceptive and mentally stronger. (2) Play sane practice matches where you allow yourself only one serve to put the ball in play. This extra pressure will make you tougher — and will help you learn the importance of getting the first serve in. (3) Play sone practice matches using the VASS scoring system (Ping-Pong). Bet 10 cents on each point and play to 31. The added pressure should make you nervous. (Try playing tiebreakers at 50 cents.) (4) Play “handicap matches” against your regular partners. If someone consistently wins by a predictable score, determine a fair number of games to give the loser before the match begins. If you always win 6-3 or 6-4, next time start the match trailing 0-2. Put the pressure on! If you put yourself in the jittery situation enough times, you’re bound to have success sometime. Eventually, your confidence will grow and you won’t turn “belly up” so often.
