Musical Jack and the Beanstalk' opening Friday . “Jack And The Beanstalk.” a feature-length animated, musical, drawn from the all-time favorite fairy tale, opens at the Goshen theatre on Friday. The Columbia release tells the traditional story of a poor farm boy who swaps his mother s cow for a handful of ‘worthless" beans. During the night, they sprout into a sky-high stalk, on w hich he climbs* to the "kingdom of the clouds.” Mixing inventive artwork and a lilting new musical score, the movie adds some fresh twists to the time-honored fable. The giant, named Tulip, is a dimwitted. evil-tempered oaf whose mother — the wicked witch. Hecuba — rules the kingdom. All of its citizens have been turned into helpless, chattering mice by Hecuba. And now she has enchapted the beautiful Princess Margaret into a mismatched marriage with her hulking son. With the help of his hound dog. Crosby. Jack determines to rescue the princess, destroy Hecuba's evil power, overcome the giant and bring home the riches of the kingdom, including a talking harp and a goose w hich lays golden eggs. Designed as fanciful family entertainment “Jack And The Beanstalk” is rated “G."

William Goldman based his original screenplay on the true story of fast draws and wild ndes, battles with posses, tram and bank robberies, a torrid love affair and a new lease on outlaw life in far away Bolivia It is also a character study of a remarkable friendship between Butch — possibly the most likeable outlaw in frontier history — and his closest associate, the fabled, ever dangerous, Sundance Kid, a story told with warmth and great humor This Newman-Foreman presentation has Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy. Robert Redford as the Sundance Kid and Katharine Ross as Etta Place, the hot-blooded schoolteacher who becomes emotionally involved with both Neuman and Redford as she joins in their exploits as highwaymen, gunmen and tram robbers in both the Old West and South America GERMAN MUTINY Units of the German fleet stationed at Kiel on Oct. 29. 1918, began to mutiny- to emphasize their demands for prompt peace negotiations.

Gold town glitters for 'Dutchess and Dirtwater Fox'

One of the most fascinating towns in United States history. Central City. Colo, is the backdrop for 20th Century-Fox's new comedy-western. "The Duchess And The Dirtwater Fox,” starring George Segal and Goldie Hawn and opening Friday at the Lake Theatre in Warsaw. Theatre in Warsaw. Surprisingly, the once-fabulous gold camp, now exquisitely restored to its former glory, was never used as a movie location site until producer-director Melvin Frank decided to utilize it late in 1975. Located less than a one-hour drive from Denver. Central City's origins go back to the late 1850's. The restless nation, still excited by the 1849 gold rush, was suffering a major depression in 1857. Rumors of gold in what is now Colorado gave weight to Horace Greeley's "Go West. Young Man” advice. On May 6. 1859, a penniless Georgian named John H. Gregory discovered gold in a remote mountain wilderness soon to become Central City. No one knows what happened to Gregory, but his find put Colorado on the map and gave birth to the exhilarating “Pikes Peak or bust” rush. In 1873 and 1874. disastrous fires destroyed most of the original frame buildings. Riding the crest of fabulous wealth, citizens constructed up-to-date brick structures that today make Central City a perfect period piece of the 1870’s. Among the remaining landmarks is the Belvidere Theatre, said to be the oldest theatre still in use in the Rocky Mountain region In “The Duchess And The Dirt water Fox," the Belvidere is seen as the dancehall where George Segal first notices Goldie Hawn as she performs a slightly raunchy song titled “Please Don't Touch Me Plums.” the lyrics of which were written by Sammy Cahn and Melvin Frank Hawn plays a 19th Century entertainer and shady lady, with Segal starring as a Grade B con artist in the screenplay written by Frank, Barry Sandler and Jack Rose and based on Sandler’s original story Another architectural jewel utilized in the new comedy is the Teller House, in its heyday the last word in luxury hotel accommodations. The four-story structure, home of the Face On The Barroom Floor, is the setting for scenes in which Hawn attempts to climb the social ladder by going to work as governess for a Mormon patriarch’s children. Melvin Frank, whose recent films include "A Touch of Class." explains. "Central City is such a period gem that few alterations were necessary before we started filming We covered the two main streets with dirt, built boardwalks over the concrete and removed traffic and neon signs Fortunately, the place is a national monument and protected from gross • modernization Though gold production figures remained high, it was no longer a boomtown The population dropped below 3,000 in the early 1880 s. By 1917. the place was nearly deserted, as many as 100 families exiting in one day. By 1925 the precious ore supply was exhausted and only 400 people remained It was a ghost town, its grand buildings and fine homes standing empty. Historically speaking, it is fortunate that Central City was off the beaten path Free from highways. development and commercialization, it remained forgotten and untouched In the summer of 1929.
