Warrior baseball team chalks up first triumph
By ESTI KEEN The Warrior baseball team chalked up their first victory Monday at their home course against the Northfield contenders. Senior Vince Rhodes fired a two-hitter to pave the way as the Warriors slid to a 9-2 victory. Among the Wawasee celebrities, one of the biggest namte was Dale Ganz, senior centerfielder who had a fine 4-4 day at the plate, not to mention a two-run home run in the fourth inning, scored a run and was responsible for tuo RBl’s (Ganz boosted himself to a 500 average and raised his team-leading RBI total to eight Don Kinney, first baseman. also turned up his best day of the season by showing a 2-4 batting tally with two RBl's and one run scored. He is in the Hits and Misses League at the Bowl, Warriorette sprinter betters national record By ESTI KEEN Wawasee's Lorene Spearman, current state record holder of the 220 yard dash would have set a national record Saturday at the Marion Invitational were it not for the absence of a wind gauge. A sophomore, the wind-racing trackster for the Warrior track team backed her team with a double victory at the five-way invitational and bettered both national marks established last season. Spearman breezed in from the 100 yard dash with a 10.4 clocking and posted 23.4 in the 220 yard dash. The national high school girls' track records were both set last year in times of 10.6 and 24.0. Coach Marsha Cad|tenter explained, "Unfortunately, I can't turn the times in because they didn't have a wind instrument. She didn't hesitate add, "I don't think it really makes any difference." Despite Spearman's fantastic individual display, the team as a whole was successful in bringing home only a fourth. Indianpolis North Central took top with 51 points followed by Fort Wayne Northrop's 47, Marion's 45, Wawasee's 31, and Huntington's 29. The only other Warrior individual winner was Barb Brouwer heaving the softball 189'0". Her season best is 231'0". Brouwer took second in the long jump. The 440 relay team came in second posting a time of 51.3. Besides Spearman, anchor lady, the team consisted of Barb Brouwer, Yoder, Kathy Bice. The race was won in 50.6 by Northrop.

Tracy Rinker qualifies for USGF national meet
Tracy Rinker. 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jan Rinker of Syracuse, qualified last week at Elmhurst, 111., for the USGF junior nationals to be held at Eugene, Oreg., on May 8. To qualify for the meet, the gymnasiast needed an 8.5 average. She will be accompanied by her coach. Dan p °e An eighth grade student at Syracuse, Tracy received five medals and a trophy at a week end meet in March at the Indiana North Webster girls to register for softball Registration for girls softball, grades three through eight, at North Webster, will be held on Saturday, May 1. from 1-3 in the afternoon at the North Webster cafeteria. Tennis scores double shutout By ESTI KEEN Wawasee’s girls tennis team was rained out in its match against Central but came out in clear weather to jostle both Rochester and Central Noble with a 7-0 shutout this past week. No. 3 singles player. Sue Krug, hailed an impressive 6-0. 6-0 victory Over Dawn Bathrick of Rochester. Coach Jack Marlette's warriorettes won six of the seven matches against Central Noble and the other by forfeit to bring their seasonal record to 3-2. Dawn Price No. 2 singles player pulled off a 6-0.6-2 victory over Jody Winebrenner. Meg Schopf handled Sandi Braden 6-4.6-3. Sue Krug won her first two sets over Rhonda Stampe 6-3, 6-0. Teresa Carpenter had an easy time 6-3. 6-1 over Nancy Simon. Pat McQuillan won by forfeit. In doubles competition the Tammy Schumm-Killie White team won over Nan Zent-Leisa Elser 6-4, 7-6. The Kathy Brouwer-Jan Lawson team won over Delain Wagner-Cindy Chester 6-3, 6-1.

State YMCA Girls Gymnastics meet at the Y in Elkhart. She took a first in all four categories, the balance beam, unevens, vaulting and floor exercises. Her fifth medal and a trophy was for first all around winner, which qualified her for national competition April 9-10 at Bethesda. Md. Ip .Maryland she placed seventh in all around events at the YMCA nationals. Tracy is currently in the process of raising monies for the Oregon trip.
