Use care in transplanting plants WEST t LAFAYETTE - Several vegetables, such as tomato, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, pepper and sweet potato, are best started in the garden by means of transplants. This means the seeds are generally first started in small containers indoors, explains John A. Wott, Purdue university extension home environment horticulturist. Later, when the plant has a good start, it is ready for transplanting in the garden. When transplanting, Wott offers these suggestions: — Transplant on a cloudy day or in the evening, if possible. — Handle plants with care. Water the plants in their containers about one hour before attempting to transplant them. Then carefully separate and remove the plants from the container, keeping as much soil

as possible cm the roots. — Dig a hole large enough so that the transplanted plant sets slightly deeper tharj it grew in the container or seed bed. — Use a starter solution of fertilizer to get the plants off to a fast start. A starter fertilizer is an all-soluble fertilizer high in phosphorus, such as 10-52-17 or 10-50-10. A fertilizer solution may be made by mixing one tablespoon of fertilizer per gallon of water. Then place about one cup of the solution around the roots of each plant when transplanting them. — Cover the roots with soil and firm the soil tightly around the plant?? — Protect newly transplanted plants from heat, wind or cold when needed ... but do not leave the protective devices over the plants longer than necessary. If it becomes warm during the day. remove the protector or open it so that the plants receive ventilation. The extra care ypu take in transplanting your 'vegetables properly should bring rewards at. harvest time.
