Joyce, Jackie Dean, Kirk Stichter and Nick Johnston. As the pioneers did. so did the students when it came to eating lunch. Back in pioneer times the schools didn't have a special room in which to eat. so if the weather was pleasant the children ate outside. The elementary students found themselves spread across the school grounds, eating sack lunches prepared by the school’s cooks. Following lunch, the school students assembled themselves together on the lawn to listen to Jerry Clase. a full-time blacksmith from Etna Green. He demonstrated the art of shoeing a horse, a skill that the pioneers had to use many times. .An afternoon program closed the day’s activities. At this time Betty Lambert’s reading group presented a pioneer play called “A Keg of Gunpowder.” There was also a square dance by some third grade students under the direction of Betty Sombronsky. Evening Program In the evening the school was open from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with many of the same activities being presented that took place during the day. Everyone who attended seemed to enjoy the activities and the Pioneer Day was a great success.
