Safety standard set for farm machinery
A new standard governing the placement of safety guards on power-operated farm equipment was recorded in the March 9 Federal Register, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Effective 90 days after publication in the register, the standard requires that all farm field and farmstead equipment, regardless of date of manufacture. be provided with guarding of power take-off drives and shafts. The standard also calls for nippoint guarding of power transmission components on all farm machinery manufactured after June 7. 1976. Nip-point guards protect the belt and pulley contact point, as well as the point where one gear meshes with another. Covering equipment operated by about 4.3 million farmers and farm workers, the standard also requires that: Employee operators be instructed in the safe operation and servicing of machinery. Functional components be shielded to the fullest extent which will not substantially interfere with the normal functioning erf the component. Machine components contain a warning of rotation, in addition to a warning sign, where there is continuous rotation after power Vehicles collide in Clinton township Both drivers escaped injury in a two-vehicle collision in Clinton township during late afternoon on Monday of last week. Drivers were Lemoine Keim. 49, r 4 Syracuse and Larry McCammon, 33. Fort Wayne. Investigating officers reported the 1974 Renault wagon driven by McCammon was eastbound on CR 38 when he attempted a left turn at CR 33 and stopped when seeing the KeimT972 Dodge top a hillcrest. Keim braked and skidded into the Fort Wayne vehicle. Damages were estimated at $450. MILFORD MAN BOOKED A Milford man. Pete R. Amador, 32, was booked at the county jail on a public intoxication charge. -He was released on a $l5O bond to county court.

is shut off. Means be provided to prevent inadvertent application of electrical power to farmstead equipment. All cotton gin power transmission and functional components be guarded by June 30, 1977. OSHA officials said unguarded machinery presents a great hazard to employees. The U. S. farmer and his employees have become more reliant upon powered, automatic, and semiautomatic equipment due to increased consumer demands and world markets. ? The standard is to make a significant contribution to reducing both the injury and fataliA’ rate of skilled farm machinery operators, and will also increase the overall productivity of the agricultural sector.
