Library staff members meet in Mishawaka library
More than 50 library staff members from ' all types of libraries in Saint Joseph, Elkhart. Marshall and Kosciusko counties gathered at the Mishawaka public library, Tuesday. March 30. to learn about a new information service. The Area Two Library Services Authority spxmsored the conference to inaugurate its reference and referral center. According to ALSA 2*s coordinator. George Brich, the center picks up where most libraries are forced to leave off "by providing in-depth reference service and obtaining that special book title through interlibrary loan.” For example, if a local library in Marshall county *ould not supply a title which a local patron requested, that member library would refer the request to the center, which would either furnish the book or search for it in other ALSA 2 member libraries. Or. for those tough questions pxresented to a local reference librarian who does not have all the necessary reference books in a collection, the librarian need only pick up the pilione and relay the questions on to the center. In most cases, the question will be answered within the same day. For more difficult reference problems, one to two days is usually a maximum. Books borrowed through the ALSA 2 reference and referral center are generally in a patron’s hands within one to three days. Except for that rare book which may not be available, almost any book title can be

obtained through the center. All that needs to be done is for a library user to make a request at a local library. Discussed at the conference were the methods and forms required by libraries to use the center. AH ALSA 2 member libraries may call the center free of charge. There is no cost to the patron or the library tor the service. "With this service.” Brich . said, “there is no reason tor any patron to go without that important answer or required book title. The idea of complete library service to the local citizens does not stop at the local library's circulation desk, it only begins there!” ALSA 2, a library cooperation program which began January 1976 with* federal funding, now has 21 member libraries. Interested libraries should call Mr. Brich at Nappanee, for more information TC Homebuilders attend cooking school at Concord The Turkey Creek Homebuilders attended the WCMR cooking school at Concord high school for their''April meeting. Georgia Fisher served as hostess . The May meeting will include a visit to the 100 Center in Mishawaka. POLE DISCOVERY Capt Roald Amundsen discovered the South Pole on Dec. 14. 1911.
