"Hearts of the West” is producer Tony Bill’s first film since “The Sting,” which won seven Academy Awards. The director is Howard Zieff, who made hts feature-film debut at MGM with the comedy hit “Slither.” and the original screenplay is by Rob Thompson, a first script by a Hollywood newcomer United Artists, an entertainment service of Transamerica Corporation, is releasing the film It will open Friday at the Pickwick Theatre in Syracuse A quintet of accomplished, highly individual players heads the cast erf “Hearts of the West”: deff Bridges firmly established his reputation several years ago in his third motion picture, “The Last Picture Showfor w hich he as nominated for an Academy Award Andy Griffith’s remarkable range has taken him from Broadway and film stardom in the comedic "No Time For Sergeants” to domination of television with the affable "Andy Griffith Show" to unforgettable portraiture in Eliza Kazan's “A Face In the Crowd " Donald Pleasence. one of England’s most distinguished and versatile actors, appears in the film as A J Nietz. a wealthy
and decidedly eccentric power in the literary field. Pleasence made his Broadway debut with Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in Shakespeare’s “Anthony and Cleopatra” awl later won the London Critics Award in Pinter’s “The Caretaker.” Cast in the leading female role, that of the motion-picture production manager Miss Trout, is Blythe Danner, the bright new star of stage, screen and television. She won Broadway’s Tony Award in “Butterflies Are Free.” a legion of fans via MGMTV's recent ‘‘Adam’s Rib” television series. Alan Arkin. who in real life has directed for both Broadway and the screen as well as performing in both areas, plays a harassed director of “B” movies in “Hearts of the West.” Arkin received an Academy Award nomination for his film debut in UA’s ‘ The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” and since ha? created many indelible characterizations. The movie shares the bill with "The Killer Elite” and plays Friday. Real estate graduates pass brokers exam The Beer professional school of real estate has announced that 75 per cent of its graduates have passed the Indiana real estate brokers exam for the February exam. This again was the highest percentage of any school, course or cram session in the state. Area residents who passed are Sandra Dickerson. Ligonier; Dennis Rumfelt. Goshen: and Max Jones of Pierceton The Mishawaka class not only drew residents from that area but from Niles. Mich ; LaPorte; and North Judson. The school will begin classes the third week of May in Mishawaka. “The Adventure Os Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother,” a new comedy; written and directed by Gene Wilder and starring Wilder. Madeline Kahn. Marty Feldman. Dom DeLuise. Leo McKern and Roy Kinnear premieres Friday at the Goshen Theatre The 20th Century-Fox presentation filmed in London was produced by Richard A. “JACK AND THE BEANSTALK” — Columbia Pictures’ fulllength animated musical. “Jack and the Beanstalk” is opening Friday at the Lake Theatre. It re-tells one of the world’s best loved stories w ith some fresh twists. Here, young Jack meets the enchanted citizens of a kingdom above the clouds, people transformed into mice by a wicked witch. The Columbia release tells the traditional story of a poor farm boy who swaps his mother’s cow for a handful of "worthless” beans. During the night, they sprout into a sky-high stalk, on which he climbs to the "kingdom of the clouds.” Mixing inventive artwork and a lilting new musical score, the movie adds some fresh twists to the time-honored fable. The giant, named Tulip, is a dim-witted, evil-tempered oaf whose mother — the wicked witch. Hecuba — rules the kingdom. All of its citizens have been turned into helpless, chattering mice by Hecuba. And now she has enchanted the beautiful Princess Margaret into a mismatched marriage with her bulking son. ti lth the help of his hound dog. Crosby. Jack determines to rescue the princess, destroy Hecuba's evil power, overcome the giant and bring home the riches of the kingdom, including a talking harp and a goose which lays golden eggs.
