Syracuse to enforce junk car and burning ordinances
By NANCY SEARFOSS During the regular meeting of the town board of trustees at Syracuse Tuesday night it was unanimously agreed to strictly enforce the junk car ordinance New owners at Wawasee laundromat Announcement has been made of the change of ownership of the Wawasee Laundromat, located at 1000 South Huntington street, Syracuse. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Lawson have purchased the well known business from Mr. and .Mrs Ron Vestal, owners for some years and will continue to serve the public with 39 washers and 17 dryers. I Mrs. Lawson, who will be on active duty «t the laundromat, states the business will be open 24 hours a day.' The junk car ordinance pertains to any motor vehicle, or the remains thereof, which does not bear a currently valid license plate and is not housed in a garage or other building. Any member of the police department may order a junk car removed within 10 days, following notice given for removal of same. If not removed within the time so fixed, the police department may cause it to be removed and disposed of at the expense of the owner of the vehicle. Burning The burning ordinance states the marshal or any deputy of the town of Syracuse, or person or persons aggrieved due to violation of any of the terms or provisions of the ordinance, may institute a suit of action in court of competent jurisdiction for violation of the ordinance. A portion of the ordinance pertains to unlawful burning of garbage, offal* animal or vegetable substances, or any matter of thing, creating a noxious odor, or injurious to health and or comfort within the corporate limits of the town. Businesses The outside burning of paper, wood, rubbish, trash and waste materials by mercantile or business establishments or by manufacturing plants within the corporate limits of the town is prohibited, unless, the fire is contained in and confined to a stove, oven, furnace, fireplace or other burning device equipped with a chimney or smokestack of sufficient height and capacity to insure the safety of surrounding buildings. Violators can be found guilty of a misdemeanor and w ill Defined The ordinance also lists a section on cutting and removal of weeds from property within the town for which fines will be assessed if done by the town. Inc., a Fort Wayne firm, spent Friday and moat of Monday cleaning the 113 catch basins in the town of Syracuse with their huge vacuum equipment. Lloyd Compton was in charge of the two-man crew on the job. The firm is charging the town of Syracuse 845 per hour for its work, as revealed at the March 16th town board meeting when two of the firm’s representatives met with the Syracuse board to deliberate the contract. The town of Syracuse is considering a perpetual maintenance program for cleaning its sewer system, including a telephoto technique of cleaning the lines.

Jan Thompson speaks at father and son banquet
The Men's Fellowship of the Bethel Church of the Brethren in Milford held its annual father-son banquet at a Nappanee restaurant on Friday. April 2. The speaker for the evening. Jan Thompson of North Manchester, was introduced by Dr. Homer Burke Thompson took a group of 10 students on a workstudy tour to Honduras after the typhoon last year The group helped repair and rebuild, plus studied the effect of a natural disaster on the people of the area.

Lions to canvas door-to-door Milford Lions have set aside its next meeting night. Monday, April 19, to canvas the Milford community door-to-door on its annual community calendar sales. The calendar has been one of the club’s major projects and has been well received. Club members will cover the community in an effort to get names, birth dates and anniversary dates for the calendar which will carry a picture of the new large animal clinic on its front cover.
