Clothes as investments
WEST LAFAYETTE - Os all of the garments in your wardrobe. which do .you think have been the most successful? Which represent the best investment of your resources, whether time and money spent buying ready-to-wear. or time, energy and money invested in making garments at home? Dr. Jean Goodrick. extension specialist in clothing and textiles at Purdue university, suggests new ways to look at your wardrobe purchasing. Sometimes, these questions are a bit difficult to answer. One may think off-hand that the best investments are for the least expensive “bargains.’" However, there are a number of criteria which will affect the actual return on the clothing dollar" investment, t in terms of satisfactions realized. The inexpensive “bargain” purchase m many-cases may not represent the best buy. especially when one estimates value, say. in terms of the cost per wearing. That is. the cost per wearing of a dress that costs S4O initially may be considerably less than the one that cost S2O. So. in the long run. it may figure to be a better investment in terms of frequency of wear, life of the garment, appropriateness to one’s life style, comfort and cost of upkeep. Estimates of a garment's cost, by the way. should include not only the initial cost but also the cost of maintenance and upkeep, says Dr. Goodrick In evaluating any choice or potential purchase, it’s a good idea to consider all factors which either contribute to or reduce your satisfactions during use and care of the garment. Does the garment fit properly? Does the color complement your coloring, and does it coordinate with other clothes on hand? Is the garment comfortable under conditions of wear? Is it in keeping with your life style, and does it help you to project an image compatible with your personality? Do you experience a “lift” when you wear the garment? Do acquaintances compliment your appearance when you are wearing it? If you wear the garment on the job, does it project the degree of professionalism expected by those with and for whom you

work? Answers to these kinds of questions help analyze the factors which influence purchases, says the Purdue specialist. They help to explain why multi-million dollar textiles, apparel and retailing industries are able to survive. They also help to explain the more-than-adequate wardrobes which many people have. Os course, not all garments are highly satisfactory. Analyzing reasons lor satisfaction or dissatisfaction may help you avoid making poor choices too often. One wonders why there are so many “poor” choices on the market. Why does one often have to be so discriminating to seek out those purchases which will give the greatest return on a clothing dollar investment? What’s satisfactory for one consumer may be quite unsatisfactory for another But there are times when you, the consumer, find yourself accepting garments which obviously won’t give you the greatest satisfaction, possibly because the specific type of item you seek is not available at the moment. Remember, says Dr. Goodrick, that any purchase can be interpreted as a vote cast for that product. As long as votes are being cast, manufacturers will continue to make that garment available to the consumer.
The spreading chestnut tree Under the spreading Chestnut tree, the village smithy stood. Once. The garage mechanic sent the smithy off to oblivion, while a fungus from the Orient virtually wiped the chestnut tree from the face of this country. The Dutch elm seems to be following the chestnut to extinction because of the deadly effects of another fungus, this time accidentally imported from Holland with a shipment of logs. Now the oaks in the northeast are being eaten aljve by a beetle that makes the trees literally die of thirst from the top down. Beech bark disease, which attacks below the belt in tree trunks, will probably destroy at least half the population of American beeches; the disease has already left a track of devastation from Nova Scotia to Indiana. Budworms are devouring spruces by the f crestful. Trees are in trouble.

Some scientists are trying to fight back, though. Last summer, researchers at the U. S. Forest Service Laboratory set over a thousand traps in Detroit alone to trap the bark beetles that are carrying a fungus infection and killing off American elms. The counter attack was ingenious. The traps were baited with a “bouquet” of odors and then tacked to any trees and telephone poles. Included in the bouquet were three fragrances: one given off by the beetles when they discover an elm; one emitted by the female before mating; and a third exuded by the invaded tree itself. The thousand traps attracted and destroyed almost four million beetles. Now other traps are being built. Trees, a precious resource that give beauty and oxygen to a polluted planet, need all the help they can get. Fast. If people could bring back the spreading chestnut tree and. for that matter, the village smithy instead of more super highways, hings could breathe easier. To find out how you can help in the fight against air pollution contact your lung association the "Christmas Seal” people. It's a Matter of Life and Breath. Avoid Errors That Can Delay Refunds Nobody wants to wait any longer than necessary for his or her Federal income tax refund. But taxpayers frequently make basic errors on their returns that can delay processing of their return—and of their eagerly awaited refund. To help speed processing of their return and any refund due them, taxpayers should avoid these basic ERRORS: Neglecting to sign the tax return (both taxpayers must sign a joint return); Copying figures from the wrong tax tables or schedules, or from the wrong line in the tables or schedules; Claiming medical deductions that don’t exceed 3 percent of adjusted gross income; Adding of subtracting incorrectly; Claiming casualty losses without first subtracting SIOO from the amount of the loss; Deducting more than onehalf of the cost, or more than $l5O, of premiums for health insurance; Failing to use the peel-off label and inserting an incorrect Social Security number, or forgetting to include a number when missing; Neglecting to include W-2 Forms from each employer, as well as all schedules and other forms needed for the return.

Travel expected to boom during Bicentennial year
Travel is expected to boom during the Bicentennial year, a very big travel season is expected, which prompts the Chicago Motor Club-AAA to encourage those travelers with flexible schedules to consider taking trips in the spring and the fall, avoiding the peak travel period of summer. No matter when you take your vacation, the motor club offers the following “Gaswatchers” guidelines to help make vacation planning easier and more pleasant, while at the same time saving you money through conservation of gasoline: — Budget the mileage you want to spend on pleasure travel, and then check out all possible recreation sites within your allocated mileage budget. This method, which the Chicago Motor Club-AAA calls the “radius travel planning concept,” may unearth some delightful spots you wouldn’t be aware of otherwise. — You may want to consider some other mode of transportation — plane, bus. train or boat for instance. If you do. be sure to made reservations well in advance. — Vacation carpools? What about those special friends you’re often too busy to see as much you like? Why not suggest a vacation with them? — Wherever you go, remember to pack light. Weight

increases gas consumption. Every 100 pounds costs one-tenth of a mile per gallon. In a small car, with a small engine, it costs as much as one-half mile per gallon. — Start your auto trip early in the morning. This way, ..you’ll avoid heavy traffic and, if the weather is hot, reduce the need for your air conditioner. — Finally, no matter when or where you do plan to go, make certain, before you leave home, that your car’s engine is thoroughly tuned and all your vehicle’s components are in tiptop shape. Measuring auto insurance risk When your insurance man* asks questions about who drives your car, how far and for what purposes, he is trying to measure the risk you pose for his firm. His report will determine the rates you pay, but at best this often is an inaccurate measure of your true insurance cost, says Runzheimer 4 Co., Inc., management consultants for business travel and expenses.
