Lakeland school board studies $ 1 million building program
Members of the Lakeland Community School Corporation s board* of school trustees are considering a $1 million building program at Wawasee. The study is the results of a meeting held last night (Tuesday) in the administrative offices of the corporation The recommendation that the SI million project be undertaken was made by Kenneth Brown of Everett I Brown. Indianapolis, the corporation s architectural firm, after a step by step study of projects proposed at ail corporation schools. ~ Brown. who also owns property in the Lakeland area and is a taxpayer here, noted the projects scheduled over the next several years at Wawasee high school — the building auto mechanics classroom. a new auxiliary gym. an all weather track and visitors bleachers, tennis courts with lighting and repair and seal blacktop He said with the current rate of inflation increasing prices at one per cent per month the school corporation would be better off to do it now than to wait and lose to inflation. He said it made sense to him to go in debt and try to beat the inflation He recommended the auxiliary gym be placed to the west of the current building, moving the tennis courts to the south He said the current tennis courts are in need of repair so the only thing that would really be lost in the move is the base as fences, etc., could be moved Brown said his recommendation would be to move the tennis courts this summer, increasing the number to eight as discussed earlier The board should do the rest of the work, which can he done locally without lad To seek a lamd issue for 10
years for the $1 million and to bid all projects at one time. School officials noted with the cumulative building fund, this

A Sharp Idea! (An Editorial) Ronald Sharp, former president of the Kosciusko County Historical Society and presently a county councilman, has long shown an interest in local history. As such, he proposed to the Syracuse town board at a recent meeting that the board change the name of Railroad Park to Henry Ward Park, after a co-founder of the town of Syracuse. We liked the idea — thought it was a Sharp idea I Sharp writes that Ward came to Kosciusko county in 1830 and with Samuel Crosson founded the town of Syracuse. He married Sarah Johnson on September 24. 1839. and both listed Syracuse as their home. Sarah's father was responsible for the name Johnson Bay at the head of Lake Wawasee. Mrs. Ward settled her husband’s estate, Sharp continues, in October 1849 and received 192.92. She could claim 1100 as her due. Bills unclaimed: Doctor bills, >63; burial expenses, >l3: two notes, of >25 and >45, to Joseph Hall; >6 owed to Jane Renfrow; 15 to John Wood; and other debts including a judgmept against Crosson and Ward, for a total of >200.50. Sharp uncovered that Ward W B s a probate judge in Kosciusko county in 1837 and 1838, receiving a fee of from >6 to >lB for each case he handled. The first election in Turkey Creek township was held in his office in his home, located where the Syracuse auto license branch is. Mrs. Ward re-married two years after Henry’s death and moved to Elkhart county. She received a >3OO settlement from Defreese for her claim on the flowering mill at the present county jail location. Mr. Ward died in the house in Syracuse, in the year 1846. His burial plot in the Syracuse cemetery cannot be found. The name Railroad Park leaves most everyone — well. blah. But to re-name the park after one of the town’s co-founders has a good ring to it— kind of a Sharp idea. We recommend it.

Town sirens to alert townspeople of tornadoes The Syracuse Are and police departments have joined in. working out a system in which to alert area residents if a tor. nado to spotted or severe weather conditions exist necessitating immediate safety precautions be taken. The town siren which now blasts three times for a fire alarm will be sounded with 12 continuous blows. Also the air horn above Levernier’s in the village area will sound. A spokesman said that the departments will immediately notify all area marinas, taverns and summer camps of the alarm so safety measures may be taken. Tornado Season When a tornado approaches, immediate action may mean life or death. Seek inside shelter, preferably in a tornado cellar, underground excavation or a steel framed reinforced concrete building of substantial construction. Stay away from windows! In office buildings, stand in an interior hallway on a lower floor, preferably the basement, in factories, workers should move quickly to the section of the plant offering the greatest protection. In homes, the basement usually offers the greatest safety, aad if no basement, take cover under heavy furniture in the center part of the house. Mobile homes are very vulnerable and trailer parks should have a community shelter. In schools, go to an interior hallway on the lowest floor, avoid auditoriums and gymnasiums or other structures with wide, free-spun foofo. If no shelter to available out of doors, go immediately to a ravine or open ditch and lie flat Remember: A Tornado Watch means tornadoes are expected to develop —a Tornado Warning means a tornado has actually been sighted. Also, stay toned to radios for up-to-date forecasts of conditions.
Magdeline and Ruth Kern Communion The sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated on Holy Thursday, April 15. at 7:30 p.m. Title of the sermon will be “Don’t Forget Me!” There will be no Good Friday service at the church, but members and friends are urged to attend the inter-church service at (Continued on page 2)
