Wawasee FFA chapter competes at Fairfield

Members of the Wawasee Future Farmers M America chapter of Wawasee high school competed in the annual district two leadership contests held Saturday at Fairfield high school. District II is one of 12 FFA districts in the state of Indiana and consists of a five-county area in north-central Indiana. There are 15 chapters within district 11. The contests are primarily designed to develop leadership abilities among the contestants. Winners advance to-I the state competition in June at the state convention. Girls' Staters are named at Leesburg

The Leesburg; American Legion Auxiliary unit 320. has selected Miss Sherry Heierman as their Girls’ Statp delegate and Miss Kim Long as alternate. Girls’ State will be held in June at Indiana State university at Terre Haute with approximately 800 girls attending. Sherry is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Heierman of Leesburg and iS a junior at Warsaw Community high school. She is a member of the girls cheerblock/She attends the Redeemer Lutheran church and is a member of the Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ. After graduation she plans to attend Ann Arbon junior college in Michigan. She also, works part time at the Peoples State Bank in Leesburg.

Wawasee speech team has first regional championship

She is majoring in math, business and art and has participated in several drama productions. After graduation she plans to continue her education in the business field. Kitten Blue Birds meet The meeting last week of the Kitten Blue Birds was held in the Scout cabin with a short business meeting after which the girls went outside for exercises. The girls are making embroidered handkerchiefs for their parents for Easter.

t Ab ■Hr J.iik fillß LEARNING ABOUT AFRICA — About 120 third and fourth grade students at the Milford elementary school gathered Monday to hear Dr. Jim VanCuren of Goshen talk about his experiences in his three-year stay in Rhodesia, a South-Central country in Africa, which is very much in the news today. Dr. VanCuren. who is an obstetrician and gynecologist at Goshen hospital.‘worked in Rhodesia as a medical missionary. The children were amazed and amused at the stories he told of life in this far-off place. Along with slides, the students saw some of the handcrafts and hardware typical of this African country. BZA to hold April meeting night Notice is given this week of a meeting of the board of zoning appeals of the town of Syracuse to be held on Thursday. April 15. in town hall for considering of several petitions. Included on the docket will be the petition of Gary W. Green for a variance in the use of land to permit placement of a mobile home for residential purposes on 5.15 acres, more or less. Also, a petition of Tom McClain for variance of lot 46 in the Howard and Lamm plat. Village of Wawasee. to allow the use of the residential dwelling building there for office purposes. Kindergarten survey is underway at Syracuse

A survey is presently underway. by officials at the Syracuse elementary school, of families in Turkey Creek township to determine their kindergarten enrollment for the 1976-1977 school year A survey letter has been sent home with elementary students, but this letter would miss families with no children in school unless passed on by others. Parents of children who will attend kindergarten at Syracuse in September should complete a survey letter and return it to the school office. Copies of the letter are available in the school office. Eligible Children are eligible for kindergarten at Syracuse if they live in Turkey Creek township, and if they are five years of age on or before September 1.
