.. Jj(h Hdhm. DtrtctOf Ttidw ’ Scots— lototmcltoo Cent'* Margaret And Macbeth You might not think there was much connection between ,H.R.H Princess Margaret of Britain and the hero-villain of one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, “Macbeth”. But Teacher’s Scotch Information Centre can show you that there is. When Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was Duchess of York, she gave birth to Princess Margaret at Gtamis Castle, Scotland, in 1930. Glamis Castle is the home of the Strathmore family and the then Duchess of York (whose husband later became King George VI) was a daughter of the Earl of Strathmore The connection between Princess Margaret and Mac beth is that Macbeth befo'f he became King of Scotland, was the Thane lor Lord) of Glamis But don't imagine that Macbeth murdered King Duncan at Glamis In spite of what Shakespeare says, Mac beth was a good King and he did not murder Duncan Macbeth died in 1057 and is buried next to Duncan in the graveyard of Kings on the Isle of lona in the Western Hebrides Glamis Castle, according to legend, contains a secret chamber in which the Monster of Glamis is kept hidden Although Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret were brought up as children at Glamis, .there is no record that they ever saw the Monster*
