Wawasee crushed by West Noble

By JOAN BULETTY Bob Heady’s Wawasee Warriors were crushed, by West Noble's basketball players on Friday night in the West Noble gym by a score of 64-73. From the first play the West Noble Chargers lived up to their name and charged the nearly scoreless Wawasee tribe, with the final score of the first quarter being 18-6. The second stanza appeared to be only a continuation of the first. The green and gold was still behind and found it an awful task to undo what damage had already been done The second half was much brighter than the first had been. About midway through the third period, the Warriors started generating momentum and began their wild rampage after West Noble Coach Heady tried different players from the bench and found a winner in Brian Smith, a sophomore from the junior varsity team. The fan's encouragement seemed to spur on the Wawasee squad who moved into the fourth quarter with more hope than they had had since the opening minutes The final stanza offered much excitement for both teams as the Warriors continually threatened the Charger's wavering lead Just as Wawasee was catching up. the starters began to foul out and their last chance was gone, but not until the end West Noble's Bruce Zim merman put on a super offensive performance to bucket 25 points Pat Dowden provided the other half of the one-two punch the Chargers assaulted the Wawasee boys with Dowden pounded the boards for 23 rebounds and ripped the cords to accumulate 19 points Keith Cnpe led the Warriors by rocketing in 15 points. Smith fired in a quick 12. and'Larry Allen and Craig Sorensen notched 10 each This game ends the Warrior's regular schedule The Trition sectional tournament is the last on the tribe's list for the season They drew a bye and therefore will go up against the winner of the Tippecanoe Valley — Triton contest tonight, m a bash on Friday night at 8. 30 p m The junior varstiy team, coached by Jerry Lambert, the West Noble B team on Friday night. 52-39 They end a fantastic season with a noteworthy 15-5 record ' Rick Parker and Worth Packer each fired in 10 points for Wawasee Sylvester, Carl and Francis each added eight points

capability, there is no reason why the Warriors can’t win their games and take the tourney. In previous encounters with the tournament teams, the Warriors have placed themselves above all but the Tigers. Coach Heady gave them an edge in light of their record and tougher schedule. He explained, “It is not that they excel in personnel or ability but that they are exposed to a better brand of basketball in which they gain better playing ability.” He maintains that the type of kids which make up the Warrior ball club stand on firm ground emotionally next to any other team. The Warr;ors gained confidence because of their record. “No doubt they are ready to play with a lot of enthusiasm being mentally and physically prepared.” “If the Warriors should be beat,” Heady defiantly aids, “it was not because the effort was not put forth, but because the things we were trying happened to be wrong.” Being a basically senior team. Coach Heady relies on the seniors to increase the emotions! involvement. The leadership hetor also plays a key role.
