Warriors in the sectional, five will compete in state
The Warrior swim team competed in the sectional swim meet Thursday and Saturday at Elkhart Central.' Swimming preliminaries were Thursday evening and diving preliminaries were Saturday morning. The finals for all events were Saturday afternoon. There were six heats in every event in the preliminaries. The top six swimmers advanced to the finals and the seventh through 12th place finishers advance to the consolation meet. Wawasee qualified seven swimmers in the finals and consolation meet. Diving preliminaries saw 25 divers competing for 12 places in the finals The first round of dives was five dives for each diver. Then a cut was made to the top 16. These remaining divers then did another three dives and a cut was made to the top 12. The top six of these were in the finals and seventh through 12th were in the consolation. Wawasee placed two divers after the first cut and one diver after the final cut to 12 divers. Saturday brought very highstrung nerves to the finals which began at 2 p.m. The first two placers in each event would automatically qualify for the state meet as well as any other contestant who bettered or met the state cut-off time. The tension mounted as the 200 medley relay got underway and it looked as if Wawasee may
pull out a first. Discouragement set in when the times found Wawasee in second place with a 1:47.110 behind Goshen's time of 1:47.05. Swimming on this team and still qualifying for state were Mark Koble. Clem Lisor. Gary Webb and Denny Spearman. In the diving events Joe Elam was in ninth place going into the consolations but did a spectacular display of diving on his last three dives and accumulated enough points to boost him into seventh place and qualify him for state. His point total for 11 dives was 354.50. Next was- the 100 freestyle where Denny Spearman came in fourth but managed to get the state cut-off time of :51.5. Topping off the day was the 100 breast stroke where Clem Lisor was seeded first with a time of

This seeds him second in the state for next Friday's preliminaries. Wawasee had six other swimmers competing in the finals but not qualifying for state. These were Denny Spearman. Clem Lisor and Brian Simmons, all in the 50 freestyle; Brian Simmons in the 500 freestyle; and Mark Koble in the 200 individual medley. As a team Wawasee finished fifth in the sectional.
