Excellent showing given by Wownsee students at contest
Wawasee *high school music students made an excellent showing last Saturday in the district music contest held in Fort Wayne. ■ Vocal, piano and string solos and ensembles enter the event according to groups depending on grade level and degree of difficulty. This is not a competitive contest and contestants are judged upon their own merit of musicianship. Only those entering in group I are eligible for the state contest to be held February 21. Orchestra Entrants From the high school orchestra. four students entered solos in group I and all four received a first rating. They were Teresa Carpenter, viola; Bryan Smith, string bass; Larry Allen, string bass; and Stan Kroh, string bass Jeff Hoerr entered a cello solo in group II and received a division two second rating. Other string bass entries were Lisa Mohler in group 111 receiving a second rating; and Mike Wakeland, group IV with a first rating. String Ensembles String ensembles which received a first rating in group 111 included a trio comprised of Becky Busch, Kathy Beer and Teresa Carpenter; and a large string ensemble composed of Becky Busch. Syracuse junior high school music„ students performed well in the NISBOVA vocal, orchestra and piano contest Saturday in Fort Wayne at Fairfield junior high Parents, friends and interested onlookers watched as students performed either in solo or ensemble events which they have been preparing for several weeks z Students perform their pieces for a judge who evaluates the playing and gives suggestions for improvement in their playing. Evaluation is made on an individual basis The students perform in groups commensurate with their level of advancement. Vocal students are under direction of Mark A. Fuller. One ensemble entered in group HI and rated a second was madeup of Jan Lawson, Brenda Simmons and Shelly Harting. Two groups entered in group IV. Receiving a second in this group were Janie Drumm, Jodi Kleeman, Linda Engelberth and Lisa Harris. The other group received a third and was comprised of Coleen Walker, Kay Kirkpatrick. Cathi Yoder, Melissa Tom, Terri Smith, Sondra Moore and Liz Davenport. First and second ratings received medals both for solos and ensembles. All of these students have worked hard for the contest and are to be congratulated, along with the parents who have supported and encouraged them.

Songs, skits, and readings will be combined for a salute to the Bicentennial. The entire elementary school will be partcipating in the program.
