Boy Scouts change rules for coin-collecting badge
By GARY L. PALMER Copley News Service From wampum to wooden nickels, coins have been helping to turn the pages of history. And in keeping with the Bicentennial coin design change, the Boy Scouts of America are making some changes, too. in requirements for a coin collecting merit badge. The coin collecting merit badge is one of 120 some badges a scout can now earn. “What we attempted to do was rewrite the requirements so they are within the eco-
nomic scope of virtually all scouts,” Kenneth L. Hallenbeck Jr., chairman of the Young Numismatists Committee of the American Numismatic Association, said. “We wanted a boy to be able to earn the badge without going to a great deal of expense, hopefully by using coins still in circulation.” Kenneth Bressett, manager of Whitman Coin Products, Western Publishing Co., Inc., Racine. Wis., authored a revised pamphlet on coin collecting for the Boy Scouts. The new badge require-
ments were developed under the leadership of Adna G. Wilde, former executive director of the ANA, and Edward C. Rochette, executive director of the ANA, in cooperation with Hallenbeck. Among changes are more flexible requirements which now include detection of counterfeit coins, proper cleaning of coins, knowledge of paper currency and exhibition of different grades of coins Those requirements which tended to cause many scouts abnormal expenses, such as
collecting a type of U.S. coins for the year of one’s birth, have been dropped or offered as one of the several optional requirements. The pamphlet reminds scouts — some 1.5 million of then — that pennies, nickels and dimes are much more than just things which make their banks rattle. And perhaps the new changes may turn some of these young citizens into the numismatists of tomorrow. Interest in the hobby seems sadly lacking in the present younger generation. KEATS BORN English poet John Keats was born Oct. 31, 1795. DUNKIRK SOLD Charles II of England on Oct 27, 1662, sold Dunkirk to France for 24 million livres.

Space for your Christmas tree
WEST LAFAYETTE — Greenery has been used to “Deck the Halls” for winter festivals for hundreds of years, and the Christmas tree has become a significant part of holiday decorations Selecting and trimming the tree is so much a part of the excitement and fun that it is easy to overlook such things as the space needed for the tree and the space left for all the other holiday activities, says Ezelle Johnson, extension specialist in home furnishings at Purdue university. Although most people don’t mind a little crowding or inconvenience during the holidays, a little planning ahead of time can add to the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of the festivities. Before shopping for a Christmas tree, take a good look at the space arrangement, traffic patterns, heat registers, and furniture in the room where you wish to place the tree, advises Ms. Johnson. Space may be of first importance. Even a small tree with a four-foot limb spread at the bottom will need an area about six feet square to allow space between the tree and walls and furniture. This extra space is important to the stability of the tree and to the safety and comfort of people in a crowded room. Plan to place the tree far enough from traffic lanes so there will be no danger of bumping or jostling in the rush of the holidays. If possibly, avoid putting the tree in front of heat registers or by a fireplace. Heat causes trees to dry out faster. Some furniture may have to be rearranged or taken out of the nxwn to make way for the tree.

Once the best spot has been chosen, measure this area before shopping for a tree, the Purdue specialist suggests. Then you can confidently select a tree that will be just right for the room. It’s a good idea to buy a tree early in the season, but it need not be put up and trimmed until a few days before Christmas. The tree will stay fresh longer and will regain its natural shape if the trunk is placed in a large container of water for several days before it is mounted for decorating. And how to decorate the tree? With all the cherished memories of Christmases past and all the spirit of Christmases to come! AMUSEMENT BAN The Continental Congress on Oct. 28, 1774, recommended a suspension of all public amusements.
