Wawasee charged by Carroll

By JOAN BL’LETTY The Wawasee Warridrs basketball team opened their '75*76 season Saturday night in a home game against Carroll. They were charged by the visitors 64-61 in a extremely close and exciting game. Coach Bob Heady feels that the 54 percentage on free throws was what lost the game for the tribe along with the 39 per cent shooting The team is young and with experience has the potential tq really improve on Saturday night s performance. The first quarter saw much evenly balanced scoring until the end when the Warriors surged ahead 24-19. In the second period the playing got much more aggressive with numerous foolish fouls which resulted in Keith Cripe and Dale Ganz, key players, being sidelined due to their number of early fouls The Carroll Chargers took advantage of the tribes replacements and outscored the Warriors by four points, but at the half Wawasee still maintained the lead by one point, 39-38. Much running and little scoring was the story of the third stanza, but going into fourth period the Chargers had attained a two point edge and the Warriors had their work cut out for them They battled and ran and jumped and shot, but failed to come closer than one point away from Carroll The finish had everyone on the edge of their seats yelling and screaming as the Wawasee team was only one point from the Chargers, but failed to get ahead and were crippled by fouls which gave Carroll the points in free throws which made the final score 64-61 Dale Ganz was the high scorer with 13 point, Larry Allen and Norm Vanlaningham both fired in 10. Vince Rhodes chipped in seven and Steve Troup added six The Wawasee junior varsity team won their game against the Carroll JV with the score 60-51

Warriors lose second game; fall to Falcons

By JOAN Bl LETTY The Wtwasee Wamors fell to the Fairfield Falcons last night iTuesday) 68-61. in their second basketball game of the season It was a close, fast moving and exciting game The free throwing percentage of 62 per cent aided in the scoring and put to use many of the fouls committed by Fairfield This free throw percentage was a great improvement over last Saturday's game and was a result of hard work and practice by the team. The shooting from the field could be improved, however, as this was what lost the game for the Wamors -* In the first quarter Wawasee got rolling right from the tip off. but were met by Fairfield's consistent scoring If the tribe had taken advantage of every opportunity they would have had the commanding lead they were striving for The second period was when the Wamors poured on a surge of energy Free throws greatly aided the accumulation of points and center Norman Vanlaningham's rebounds sparked the team's power drive After the half Fairfield came out of the shadows and entered ‘ into the spotlight by taking Wawasee's 35-29 halftime lead and gaming two points on the tnbe by the end of the period for a score of 51-49 tn their favor. By the fourth stanza the Warriors realized that Fairfield's strength was not a passing thing.
