SteveMcQueen . stars in The Towering Inferno' On a motorcycle, on Devil’s Island, or holding up the First National: these are situations in which Steve McQueen appears to be operating on a level of compassion and understanding. Now in a somewhat startling turnabout, McQueen is wearing a fire hat and devoting his considerable energies to fighting flames and saving lives. He is a law-abiding citizen and a public servant with wife and family, and a friendly enemy to Paul Newman in Irwin Alien's production of “The Towering Inferno” opening Wednesday at the Pickwick Theatre. This is a joint project of Warner Bros, and 20th CenturyFox. and by all odds, the most auspicious screen event of the year. Allen himself directed the action sequences. “As far as my role was concerned.” says Steve, “the heat was definitely on.” Nearly 70 per cent of his scenes in the story of the world s tallest skyscraper that catdies fire on the eve of its dedication find McQueen sharing the camera with smoke and fire. As a San Francisco fire department battalion chief, it's his job to conquer the holocaust. Others in the cast including Paul Newman, William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, Jennifer Jones. Richard Chamberlain, O. J. Simpson, Robert Wagner, Robert Vaughn and Susan Blakely, share scenes with the movie’s inferno but in lesser degrees. What makes McQueen’s performance particularly uncomfortable was that he usually was wearing close to 50 pounds erf firefighting gear, such as air tanks, firemen’s masks and proximity suits. The outfits were particularly devoid of ventilation and working close to high temperature flames sends the body temperature well past the level of continued human endurance “By the end of the day I was slightly on the worn-out side,” Steve admits, “but not from the effects of the heat. More (from the effort of taking all that gear off and putting it back on between scenes.” In spite of the discomfort. McQueen appeared supremely happy with his choice of role. During his pre-production training period with fire chiefs Peter Lucarelli and Jack

Cavallero. who serve as the technical advisers for “The Towering Inferno,” Steve became particularly gung-ho in his admiration of firemen, going so far as to pitch in and help the Los Angeles smoke-eaters when they were battling the flames that destroyed a. large portion of the Samuel Goldwyn studios in Hollywood. “I've got nothing but admiration for those guys,” adds McQueen, “and the least I could do was to make every effort to portray them properly in the movie.” “The Towering Inferno” directed by John Guillermin with Irwin Allen directing the action sequences opens Wednesday at the Pickwick Theatre.
