With all the talk about big. consolidated schools with their multi-sports programs, vocational training, and the like, there’s one small school in the Lakeland corporation almost completely overlooked That's the Maple Grove Amish School, located in Jefferson, about 7‘i miles southwest of Milford. A Mail Journal photographer caught four Amish farmers plowing a nine-acre field on the Ezra Schmucker farm one day last week with teams of horses, following the harvesting of com there The farmers, using four .teams of 15 horses, were Freeman Kuhns. Albert Mullet. Lonnie Miller and Melvin Schmucker What does this have to do with the Maple Grove Amish school? The nine-acre field was corn, and the corn yield went toward the support of the Maple Grove school. Also planted for the Tcnefit of the school were eight acres of beans and about eight acres of wheat. The Maple Grove school receives no state support, and has 20-30 students with two teachers The Amish support their school fully, and in other years have held public auctions to raise money for their school 808 CLINE. Milford industrial arts teacher now in his fourth year, is a practical joker as far as his grandfather, Frank Kline of Huntington. is concerned. Bob made his avid golfing grandfather a putter out of inch plastic pipe, which he will present to him as a Christmas present. to us by several persons in the community on raising children — government's or parent's rights? After publication we received several calls from persons wanting more information and attempted to obtain a copy of the bill HR 2966 only to find the supply was depleted We are grateful to Mrs Ronald (Connie* Smith who shared her copy with us. The bill was authored by Indiana's Congressman John Brademas and entered in the 94th Congress on February 6 of this year. It has been the subject of several editorials, including both newspaper and television. We have read the bill, not once but twice, and like others who have read it we have not found anything in the actual bill to confirm the fact that the con sequences of the bill would be bad for the American family The bill does, m fact, state the family is the primary and most fun damental influence on children Congressmen say the bill Is to help only where needed. A letter from our own Con gressman Floyd Fithian says, “ There are six million preschool children in this country with working parents and only some one million spaces m daycare centers to serve these children Consequently, the greater number of children are receiving inferior attention or no care at all In many cases, mothers go on welfare because there is no day-care facility This legislation is designed to help these children and ease the pressures on their families . Our personal opinion, having read the bill and all other information we could find, is that there may not be anything wrong with this bill but the mounting intrusion of the government in every facet of American life is not good. Why can't these mothers start day-care centers of their own to help each other in-
stead of relying on the government to do every thing for them? We’ll leave it up to you . . . our letter objecting to the bill stands . .. we don’t think it is necessary .. . JRS A NICE note comes to The M-J from Betty (Mrs. Maurice) Beer concerning the new Main street parking lot She writes. “It is wonderful to park near where I get my hair done each week, and it helps to find a parking place near the town at other times. It is greatly appreciated." The lot. which will park 22 cars, makes for greater public parking in the downtown business area. It is used by M-J staffers during the week and by the Milford Chapel evenings and week ends. Belated birthday wishes go to Mrs Henry (Freida) Ruch of West Catherine street in our town. She was 89 years young on Tuesday. Nov. 18 Mrs. Ruch has 'mothered’ the area in which she lives for many years. She has always been willing to help whether it was a senior citizen or a small child that was in need. This w riter can remember one Easter eve when her small son was to appear in a program the next day The new trousers that were taken home for him to wear needed adjustment. Freida, although, she was having a family dinner the next day, took fame late in the evening to help with a "cuff" job on the slacks. This is just one instance of her selfishness There is never a time, if she is able, that she will turn down a chance to help others Members of the Apostolic Christian church found her always ready to assist while she served as custodian for many years. If there was a problem, major or minor, it could always be taken to Freida. Mrs Ruch is the mother of twin daughters, Mrs. David C. (Lena) Beer of Mansfield, Ohio and Mrs. William (Lea) Frush. Jr. of Warsaw She also has two other daughters. Mrs JohnC. <Wilma) Becker of Bristol and Mrs William (Katherine* Longcor of Goshen and four sons, Elmer of Constantine. Mich.. Fred of Warsaw. Robert of Milford and Walter, who is deceased. The Milford community is proud lo have a citizen like Freida and wishes her many more happy, healthy years.
