Warriors sweep Concord 30-28
By JOAN BI'LETTY Hal Traviolia’s Warriors swept by the Concord Minutemen last Friday night in the final seconds of a wintry football game at Wawasee high school, 30-28 Steve Kroh saved what the Wawasee fans thought would be the Warriors third loss of the season, but instead added another victory to give his team a 6-2 overall record and 4-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference Kroh grabbed a 25 yard pass, shot by quarterback Keith Cripe with just 21 seconds left in the game to end what turned out to be one of the most thrilling games of the season The Warriors charged onto the field with confidence and exhuberance, which they demonstrated skillfully in the first quarter of play Rick Bauman, Wawasees running ace put the Warriors on the board after Dennis Spearman flashed 30 yards to the Concord 22 yard line on a punt return It took Baumait just two runs before he hit paydirt and score the tribe's first touchdown of the evening Bauman, then ran for two extra points and the Warriors had an 80 lead Todd Haines set up the tribe s next touchdown by scooping up a Concord fumble on the Minutemens 30. Cripe and Bauman both gobbled up yards as they ran several times before Cripe passed a 15 yarder to Jerry Rhodes for the second Wawasee touchdown In the second stanza the Minutemen finally came out of their shell to fight back at the Warrior’s steamroller offense which appeared to be flattening the Concord team out. After five plays they scored as Concord quarterback Rick Sweazy hit Dennis Gunden across the goal line on a two-yard shot The two-point conversion worked and the Minutemen s spirits were lifted The Warriors and Minutemen exchanged possession of the ball a few times and finally Concord s offense took hold and Gunden scored again but the two-point conversion attempt was halted by a great stop by Randy Ricker lYie score at hal&ime was then 16-14, with the Wawasee team holding a slight lead The excitement of the second half was what kept the freezing fans in the bleachers warm and yelling Bauman was making his way down the field with the help of Todd Haines and was knocking on Concord’s door when Minutemen. John Herkenroder answered by grabbing a fumble by Bauman and marching 93 yards to the Wawasee end zone and another score for the Concord Minutemen The kick made the score 21-16 and Concord was on top However, their lead was shortlived as the Warriors moved quickly down the field and Keith Cripe scored on a quarterback sneak and also ran for the two extra points to put the tribe back out in front 24-21 at the end of the third quarter _ Concord started off the fourth stanza and after several plays the Minutemen scored and again took the lead 28-24 Wawasee pounded out many long yards without giving up hope or losing confidence bes ore Cripe fired his most important pass of the night to Kroh for the final touchdown to finalize the score at 30-28 with only 21 seconds left on the clock The passing of Keith Cripe and the elusive running of Rick Bauman proved to be the one-two punch that upset the Minutemen Cripe passed for 146 yards in 14 completions and Bauman ran for 137 yards in 26 carries Steve Kroh was the leading receiver, catching seven passes for 63 vards Wes Bell caught three for 23 yards and Dennis Spearman covered 24 yards in two catches The fine defensive line had a great night as Bill Rensberger had nine assists and one solo tackle. Both Jeff Miller and Todd
