Warriors stomp Fairfield

By JOAN BULETTY , The high-powered Wawasee Warriors stomped right through the Fairfield Falcons in a home football game last Friday night winning 32-14. The blustery chill of the wind did not put a damper on the Wawasee side of the field While the fans kept warm with blankets, coffee and exaltant cheers the tribe really fired up to outscore Fairfield by more than sufficient 18 points. The Fairfield team and fans came into Warrior territory with high hopes of an upset, but retreated with a total gain of 200 yards offense, with only 30 of these meager yards being passed , The Falcons started off the first quarter by grabbing a Wawasee fumble on their three yard line and marched toward the end zone in nine plays Then the Falcon s quarterback Earl Keim hurled a pass to Brian Snider for the first touchdown of the night The two point conversion gave Fairfield a lead of 80 at the end of the first quarter The Warriors stampeded into the second quarter with an eight yard run by quarterback Keith Cripe and a bullet caught by Wes Bell and the Warriors were on the Fairfield 15-yard line A pass to Joel Popenfoose set the tribe up and Cripe hurled the ball to Ralph Reiff for a touchdow n with 10:33 left yet in the quarter Reiff was knocked down after the kick return and was carried off the field on a stretcher with a serious knee injury which will put him out for the season most likely When the Falcons punted to Wawasee. a few plays later, they were shocked to see Dennis Spearman dash 70 yards to hit paydirt once more for the Warriors, which put them ahead 12-8. Shortly after the shock had worn off. the Falcons returned the stunt byway of Brian Snider Snider caught the following kickoff and flew 85 yards to add another tally for the Falcons, to bring the score to a 14-12 edge over Wawasee Starting off the third stanza. Wawasee kept the ball in its possession and inched forward until Cripe shot a bullet to Steve Kroh who carried the pigskin to Fairfield’s 23 Five plays later the tribe scored on a one yard dash to put the Wamors on top again Fairfield failed to make efficient use of the ball and the Warriors were in charge again, and charge they did with some hard running by Jeff Miller and sophomore Jim Glon who filled in for running ace. Rick Bauman who was out with a bad knee and later went in for Popenfoose also With only 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Cripe ran the final four yards to light the scoreboard once more for Wawasee The Fairfield team began the final stanza, but fumbled after only three plays on a stop by Bill Rensberger and an excellent recovery by Larry Allen However, the tribe failed to make a first down and the Falcons took over on their own 34 yard line only to have a pass intercepted by the agile playing of Jeff Miller who raced to within 10 yards of a touchdown. The tribe failed to make use of this opportunity and the football went back to the Falcons who ended up punting to the Warriors only five plays later
