ll FOUNDER AND CHARTER MEMBER — Rev. John Week*, pictured above was a founder of the Heart of the Lakes Business Association. He is a charter member. Weeks was pastor of the United Methodist church in North Webster for seven years. He was very active In community affairs. He and his family moved to Kendallville last spring.
'Great Event' set at the Syracuse park
Members of Warsaw Post 67 and their sponsors, the Warsaw Lions club, will be serving as hosts for the last big happening of the summer season this coming week end It is the week end of the •Great Event." The annual Makahiki, the Hawaiian name for the event, will be held at the Syracuse city park on Syracuse Lake Events are planned at the park ami at the Lakeland Youth Center which is located at the south edge of town on state road 13 Scouts will arrive in Syracuse on Friday. Aug. 22. with from 300 to 400 expected from a five-state area A talent show is planned for the beach Friday night. On Saturday various swimming events, a Marlin spike, compass relay, cator toss, mini bike-a thon. skate board event, sailing events and a hand paddle canoe race A drill event is set for 3 pm on Saturday at the youth center

A group of businessmen from the lake area including North Webster, joined together May 14, 1973, to form an organization, headed by Rev. John Weeks, pastpr of the United Methodist church, with the help of Mauri Howe and Phil Rinker The main purpose of organizing at that time was to gather information on burglar alarm system, after theft and fires in North Webster. The first meeting was held at the United Methodist church. The name chosen for the group was “The Heart of the Lakes Business Association". On June 4, six committees were formed, with chairmen appointed. They were: Community development, advertising, public relations, legislative, current events and executive committee. The purpose and objects of the organization are: To create unity in the community; to promote and practice fair and ethical business principles; to take active interest in civic, social and moral welfare; to take active interest in community development; to provide a medium for exchange of business information; and to provide

Tentative agreement on phone company union contract United Telephone Company of Indiana, Inc., has reached tentative agreement on a new contract with the bargaining committee of LB.E.W. Local 1321 } The former contract expired at midnight, August 14. 1975. The terms of the proposed agreement will be presented to the membership of the union local for a vote this evening (Wednesday).

members from about 70 businesses in the lake area, of good character and standing in the community. The fiscal year begins July 1 and ends the following June 30. Regular
business meetings are held the last Monday of each month, except June, July and August, at Camelot Hall, Counting House Bank, North Webster. Officers for the organization are selected at the annual meeting and installed at the January meeting and hold office for one year. The present officers are: President — Larry Kinsey Vice president — Fee Ullom Secretary — Mrs. Floyd Wickersham Treasurer — Richard Kierein Projects The group sponsored a Halloween and Christmas party; donated to God’s Childrens recording; sponsored a needy family at Christmas; sponsored a snowmobile show, a boat show; endorsed the Welcome Wagon; purchased coat racks and chairs fcr Camelot Hall; co-sponsored the sky divers at Mermaid Festival; sponsored two children to the Cardinal Olympics; and sponsored a queen for the Mermaid Festival. These are the projects completed in the past year.
