Money' is reason for Don Drake's resignation

Milford town marshal Don Drake stated Tuesday he was resigning after 10 years on the Milford police department because he felt he should be paid more money. He is serving as the town’s only law enforcement officer. The cost of living, he said, is going up and my salary hasn’t increased accordingly. He further commented the job was confining since he was answering calls 24 hours per day. Drake said he had talked with board member Norman Lovell as early as June 30 about resigning. No official resignation, however, was read at the July 14 meeting of the board. His resignation is effective as soon as a replacement is found. He said he did. however, have an oral agreement with board president Dr. T. A. Miller this would be done before August 15. Drake began as a deputy in 1965, serving under marshal Ralph Gansert until 1968. He then became marshal. Records from 1967 show the combined total of the salaries of the two men were set at $11,200 to be paid in 1968. Additional records show Drake had received a S3OO raise on January 1, 1968 Minor damage in backing accident Minor damage was reported as Walter A. Leach. 19, r 1 North Webster backed a 1967 Ford into the parked 1972 Olds owned by Jerry A. Conder, 20, Goshen, on Monday afternoon. Leach was attempting to pull from a parking place on Main street in Syracuse and backed into Conder’s left rear fender. The Conder vehicle was damaged an estimated $75, the Leach auto, sls.

and would be paid $5,700 during that year. In February he was given a SIOO raise, increasing his yearly salary to $5,800 and a deputy, John Hershberger, was hired. The budget published in 1969, payable in 1970, set the salaries of the marshal and deputy at $11,200. Hershberger resigned in the spring of 1970 and Drake has served alone except for deputies who have been appointed from time to time to help during week ends. These men have been paid little or no compensation. In 1971 figures show the marshal received SB,OOO. A published item in 1973 showed Drake's salary was $8,500. The budget published in 1974, payable in 1975, showed compensation for marshal was $9,000. The budget which is being published in this issue of The Mail-Journal shows the same figure is payable in 1976. At a recent meeting of the board increased figures were approved for the payment of an insurance plan adopted for Drake and John Martin some years ago. Martin is street and water and sewer commissioner. Miller Comments Board president Dr. T. A. Miller said this morning several applications have been received for the post of town marshal. He said the board had told the state police and various sheriff's departments it was looking for an officer and several of the applicants have training and experience in police work. A new marshal, Miller said, is expected to be named at the board’s regular meeting on Monday night. Miller confirmed the fact that Drake had talked with board

member LovelL Lovell told Miller and the town’s third board member Bessie Sunthimer of the oral resignation following the board meeting on July 14. Conflict Miller said, when asked about the money, that the board had been assured money was not the reason for the resignation. He said both he and Lovell had talked about money with Drake. The reason the $9,000 salary remained in the budget for 1976, Miller said, is because Drake’s oral resignation had been presented to the board on July 14 and the budget meeting was held on July 17. At that time the board felt if it would be hiring a new man there would be no reason to start him out at a higher salary than Drake had been receiving.
