It f s time to speak out! I
(Editorial) There is a growing feeling among almost all Americans that many of their basic freedoms and options are being chipped away by a Big Brother government. And there's real justification for this feeling on most all levels of government — county, state and national. The trend is so indicative and irreversible, that there is little if any room left for the entrepreneur, the man who struck out with little money in his pocket and with little save his wits to "make it on his own." The "Mom and Pop store" is a thing of the past, and small business is constantly being threatened. There is an individual feeling of defeatism among the people. "I gripe about it, but nobody listens," is a common lament. What brings us to this point is the recent approval by the office of Lakeland schools superintendent Don Arnold, supported by the five-man Lakeland school board. It concerns the publishing of an athletic program to be distributed at school athletic events, in competition with one already being issued free of charge at such events, published and distributed by this newspaper. The fact that It Is so close to home for us gives us reason to comment on it. We feel It Is wrong, and we want to state our case publicly. The athletic program is being published ostensibly to raise funds to support girls' athletics. It will be supported by selling advertising in the community to businesses interested In the school's athletic program. Our case is simple: We feel, and have conveyed to the school board in the strongest terms, that the school has no right to go into competition with a local business. This applies, as far as we are concerned, with other areas as well; for example, the vocational shop has no right being in competition in any way, shape or fashion with a local garage, thus depriving the garage owner of revenues. In the case of the athletic program, again Mr. Arnold's office has approved coordinator Terry Frank to use his time to work on the program. First, we feel Mr. Frank has been employed by the school as athletic coordinator and not a fund raiser. And, second, it makes our hair curl to think our tax dollars are paying his salary, and that he is turned loose to go into competition with us in this manner.

If Mr. Frank does not have enough to do as I "athletic coordinator," he should be dismissed, or | he should be given other responsibilities. Certainly, I he should not be "put into business" to raise money J in a competitive manner with a local firm. What's more, the school has been using school | stationery and stamps purchased with tax dollars | to solicit advertising within the school corporation. | Old Tom Paine would turn over in his grave if | he knew this! When this fund-raising effort first came to j| light, we proceeded to state our point of view in | opposition to such a move — first to Mr> Frank. | When this failed to receive a reply of any sort, we | put our thoughts in a three-page letter and hand | delivered it to the office of school board president | Billy G. Little. That was the last we heard of It. Not I so much as a reply —of any sort. An "iron curtain" | came down on the issue. We have spoken to many corporation tax- | payers who comment they have been heard politely | by the school board about their concerns but have | received nothing substantive in reply. We can say | less in our case, for as of this writing we have failed J to receive any sort of reply from the board about , our concerns. However, we learned that the letter we hand- | delivered was discussed by the entire school board in a closed meeting, and the board decided to continue its approval of issuing an athletic program. And this, mind you, knowing that four of the | five board members are businessmen. Perhaps, s next the school board will decide to go into com- I petition with one of them. Certainly not! Our letter did affect one change In plan, | however; the school deftly decided to pull Mr. | Frank off the job and put him back into the athletic | coordination business. So far as we could learn this | is true. The school has chosen, rather, to use | "volunteers" within the corporation to sell its ads. | The school makes a strong case that It needs | more money to support girls' athletics, but at the g same time releases no financial statement of its g overall athletic revenues and expenditures to show | that it doesn't already. In fact, have sufficient i revenues for this new program. We stand at the head of the line in supporting | girls' athletics at WHS, but object to the manner J the school proposes to finance them. Our case stands: We are against our school, | fine as it is, going into any sort of local business in | competition with a local concern.
