AROUND a&jio / /\£ z jl 1/ IT IS This little Beaver is the symbol being used state-wide by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and it appears on posters locally advertising the second annual event to be held here Saturday, July 19. According to Sharyn ■ Mrs. Matt) O’Hare, who is heading up the local effort again this year, they hope to have over 100 swimmers making the trip of over one mile from the Waco = Beach area to Wawasee Prep, beginning at 11 am. Another swim will be held at 2 p m. for those who can t make the earlier swim Last year 6X took part and raised over 35.000. Mrs. O’Hare said. Incidentally, she is being assisted by Cyndi (Mrs. Torn) Thornburg and Jane (Mrs. Carl) Doty. Many who watched this year's fireworks at Syracuse city park called them the best ever ”We don’t know about that, but we can attest they were excellent John Kroh and Tom Prickett, whose job it is to raise the f 1,500 to pay for the fireworks, state they are still 1150 short and anyone can contribute by contacting either of Che two men. especially good one went off. It makes it all worth while, this sort of appreciation. Then there was the traffic. The night was warm and conducive to people coming out. An estimate of well over 600 boats on Syracuse Lake was heard. No one really knows, but you can bet there were plenty of them. Road 13, going through Syracuse, was a constant stream of cars going north and south. Local gendarmes were busy for at least an hour after the fireworks to get people on their way home. < Nancy (Mrs. Charles) Searfoss. sidelined briefly due to an operation, watched the fireworks from the vantage point of her home high on a windy hill on the county line road. Similarly, many around Syracuse Lake had good viewing points. Tim Henning and Bob List, who rent a farm home on the Eli Lilly road east of Wawasee Airport, were surprised when over 500 turned out for their Second Annual Fourth of July Farm Heller Some called it a “beer bust.” and with some justification, since there were over 20 kegs of beer on tap for the thirsty mob Road signs attracted folks, mostly yoimg people, to their place. beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, the Fourth. Police were. called when the glut of cars and people walking along the highway obstructed normal traffic. One officer from the coiaity police department. Tom Kitch of Syracuse, went into the place and didn’t come out for a long time, a cause for concern among investigating officers A state police helicopter kept a surveillance oyer the area. This column has been informed it revolved into a beer-bottle-throwmg affair. A .second “Heller” was scheduled for a farm home on county road 55®N the following night, but it failed to materialiie. Look for an announcement of change of ownership of a long established business in Wawasee Village in next week’s M-J. Rev. August i.Augie) Lundquist of Auburn will be returning to home turf when he will be guest speaker at Epworth Forest Sunday morning services July 13. He is a former pastor of Saint Andrews United Methodist church. Syracuse. Mim Speicher and daughter Sue. Jerry Bauer and Dorothy Jones, the smoothly-fmctioning team at My Store, are glowing all over, knowrung that their boss. Phil Oppenheim, is an announced candidate for the Republican nomination for the second congressional seat. Phil is a native of North Manchester, has a summer home just off Lake Tippecanoe on the golf course, and is well known in this area. The four youngsters who had the small boat in the Lake Wawasee Flotilla Sunday are to be commended. Entered under Love Gardens, they won second in residential category. They were Bruce and Brad Sherk' Chns Elder and Rhonda Shipley No “Jaws” on Lake Wawasee or Syracuse Lake. A remark overheard this week by someone who just read the best seller “Jaws” by Peter Benchley, said they were almost afraid to go swimming in either of the local lakes because of sharks
We can assure you. fearful ones, that we’ve lived here many years and have yet to see a maneating shark surface on a local lake. You’ve got to hand it to Bob Knudson of the Syracuse Lions dub. \ Bob is talking before district 25G Lions clubs, entreating their members to purchase tickets to "Cabaret” at Enchanted Hills Playhouse on July 23. He has 24® tickets to sell. \ Out of th .* price of each ticket the Playhouse is giving ll.OQto the Syracuse Boy Scout cabin fund. If we know Bob hell put it across. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Heyde of the Syracuse area will be observing their fiftieth wedding anniversary in the lounge of the West Side branch of the Bremen State bank from 2 p m. to 3 pm this coming Sunday afternoon. The branch of the bank where the event is to be held was omitted from the announcement in last week’s paper. "Boime" Jones, r 1 Syracuse, who in younger days wrote sports for the Toledo Union-Journal, sends us this: The. Herman Roh rig mentioned in a recent Mail-Journal story was a member of the Green Bay Packers in 1941. ’46 and ’47. On the 1941 team with him were Don Hutson. Clark Hinkle. Cecil Isbell. Joe Laws, Andy L'ram. Hal Van Every. The team won 1® games, lost one. The Bears beat them in a play-off. Some of the linemen who cleared the lanes for Roh rig, Laws. Hinkle and Uram were Paul Engebretsen. Ed Frutig. Pete Tinsley. Ernie Pannell and George Svendsen. The coach was “Curly” Lambeau. How many "young” oldtimers remember these greendad gladiators? It looked like old home week at the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn., one day last week when the following local names appeared on the desk registry: Mr. and Mrs* Gene Ludwig. Mr. and Mrs. John Walker. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Thornburg, and Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Yoder. The Wawasee high school class of 1975, now disbursed to the four winds, faces an unusual situation with the closing of the Mermaid Festival. Their choice as "Miss Wawasee” in the Queen contest. Rhonda Graff of Milford, won 350® for best queen’s conveyance. Principal Henry Smith states the state board of accounts precludes the class giving the money to Miss Graff, but allows for reimbursement for any expenses incurred in preparing for the parade and contest. Class sponsor Robert Kitson and class officers who can be contacted hope to reach a decision this week on the disposition of the money. Mr. Smith states a similar situation occurred several years ago when Jeff Hughes won 3500 and Tom Fribley won 3200 in a knight tourney at the Festival. At that time, and in order not to receive money and thus become professional athletes. Hughes' money went for basketball scareboard panels and Fribley s money went for a 16 mm football motion picture camera Helping sponsor Kitson make the decision in Rhonda’s case will be Jon Owens, class vice president, and Ann Mangas, secretary-treasurer. Class president Paul Miller is in Colorado Springs. Colo., in the air force academy.
