Mushroom stories are still being heard about the area with Nancy Prickett telling one Tuesday morning — while riding the lawn mower, no less — and then there is the one told by the NIPSCo meter reader finding them .at the front steps of a residence (and the lady GAVE them to him.) & THE EDITOR

Stop signs mean STOP

Dear Editor: This letter is to the party with license plate number 43516. It has been my understanding that stop signs are meant for every driver on the road. Not just a few. It was my dubious pleasure to meet you

Substandard system

Dear Editor: As a concerned ‘citizen of the Syracuse area, I have noticed, in the past several years, that our tornado warning system in our community, is quite substandard to what it should be. In recent times, when we have had several direct threats to the area, the only knowledge of oncoming severe weather is by my own police radio. Unfortunately, not every one owns a receiver, to get these warnings. The town, to my knowledge, has never been directly hit. but as we all know, narrowly missed the onslaught of a twister a little over a year ago. I sincerely feel the need of additional warning devices around the lakes, including the Dewart Lake area. The siren is adequate for the uptown and the west end of Syracuse Lake. The horn in the village is good for that part of town. too. But. when the wind is blowing very strong from the right, direction, neither can be heard on the eastern shore of Syracuse Lake or for twothirds of the way around Wawasee. We need a system that can be heard by everyone, not

just a few who might be listening for it. Also, we need someone to activate the system, who wouldn’t use their own judgment on such occasions to decide not to alarm some of the older residents by not blowing the siren, as I was told by the operator on duty on April 3d of last year. At one blink of an eye, the tornado could have wiped out this town, and to think if that would have happened, how many lives and injuries would have been prevented. We shouldn’t worry about the "unnecessary alarm" caused by Mowing the horn, for I feel that many would rather be aware of what’s coming than to lose their lives or" be injured, due to an insufficient warning. 1 think if we put our heads together, we could come up with something better than what we have now.
